Analysis of the Influence of De-hazing Methods on Vehicle Detection in Aerial Images

Abstract: In recent years, object detection from space in adverse weather, incredibly foggy, has been challenging. In this study, we conduct an empirical experiment using two de-hazing methods: DW-GAN and Two-Branch, for removing fog, then evaluate the detection performance of six advanced object detectors belonging to four main categories: two-stage, one-stage, anchorfree and end-to-end in original and de-hazed aerial images to find the best suitable solution for vehicle detection in foggy weather. We use the UIT-Drone… Show more

“…Clear vision in scattering media is critical for various applications such as industrial and civil fields 130 , traffic surveillance systems 131 , automatic drives 132 , remote sensing 133 , rescue operations 134 , seabed mapping 135 , monitoring of marine species migration and coral reefs, and scene analysis 136 . However, when capturing images in a scattered environment, the visibility of objects is typically sharply degraded, which is caused by the scattering of suspended particles such as clouds, water, haze, smoke, smog, fog, and mist in the air, soil particles, floating excrement of marine animals, algae, and mineral salt in underwater scenes.…”

“…Object Detection in Aerial Images (ODAI) has always been important in our real life with tremendous real-world applications such as surveillance, disaster prediction, emergency rescue, and even urban management [1] [2] [3]. Nowadays, it is becoming more feasible thanks to the increasing growth of studies in deep learning and the fast-paced development of information and communication technology.…”
