Analysis of the Impact of Climate Change on Surface Water Quality in North-Eastern Poland

Abstract: This article presents the influence of climatic conditions on surface water quality. The research methodology, including physicochemical analysis from the Gołdapa and Bludzia rivers, is presented. The research lasted for two years. The results of the physicochemical studies of the Gołdapa and Bludzia rivers in early spring, spring, and autumn show that each of these seasons impacts the quality of surface waters. Moreover, it was proven that all the parameters are strongly correlated with the air temperature, t… Show more

“…The study also analyzed selected physicochemical parameters of water, including pH (potentiometric method), electrolytic conductivity (EC; conductometric method), total nitrogen ( TN ; spectrophotometric method), nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 –N; spectrophotometric method), phosphate phosphorus (PO 4 –P; spectrophotometric method), total phosphorus ( TP ; spectrophotometric method), dissolved oxygen (DO; electrochemical sensor), 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ; dilution method), and chemical oxygen demand (COD; permanganate method). Each water determination was repeated three times (Szymańska-Pulikowska et al 2023 ; Puchlik et al 2022 ; MIP 2021 ; MHP 2019 ).…”

“…For example, in the following sites: Lake Erhai and Three Gorges Reservoir in China 27 , 28 , Englishmen Lake in Spain 29 , Lake Tana in Ethiopia 30 , Lake Cedrino in Italy 31 , Cointzio reservoir in Mexico 32 , Lake Taupo in New Zealand 33 , Lake Erie in the United States 34 , Lake Ypacaraí in Paraguay 35 , Keban reservoir in Turkey 36 , and Anavilundawa in Sri Lanka 37 . Climate change may have intensified eutrophication process by altering temperature and humidity, manifesting in more frequent occurrence of hydrological extreme phenomena, such as droughts and floods (higher temperatures and persistently low water levels rapidly influx organic matter and favor development of algae, responsible for eutrophication) 38 40 . Eutrophication in reservoirs itself may accelerate the increase in air temperature on a larger scale due to the emissions of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ), produced by algae 41 .…”
