Resumen. Introducción: al laboratorio llegan diferentes soportes para ser analizados, los cuales pueden contener fluidos como sangre, semen, saliva u orina. Una herramienta de apoyo en la identificación de manchas biológicas no visibles es la observación con luces forenses. En la actualidad, se cuenta con avances investigativos en los que se hace referencia a la longitud de onda y a la combinación con diferentes filtros para la observación de fluidos biológicos. Metodología: en esta investigación, se utilizó el equipo de luces alternas Polilight® Flare con luz azul, junto con filtro y gafas naranjas, para la observación de manchas de fluidos biológicos depositados en distintos tipos de textiles y otras superficies que se reciben con frecuencia en el laboratorio. Resultados: el principal resultado de este estudio fue determinar la confiabilidad del equipo en términos de reproducibilidad y repetitividad de los resultados, al igual que la influencia de variables tales como el sustrato, la edad de la mancha, el origen del fluido y posibles interferentes en la observación de fluorescencia de fluidos biológicos. Conclusiones: se encontró que las manchas biológicas que emitieron la fluorescencia más fuerte fueron las de semen, seguidas de las manchas de orina y saliva. Las manchas de sangre no emitieron fluorescencia y fueron denominadas como no-fluorescentes. La permeabilidad de los sustratos hizo que el halo de fluorescencia fuera mayor sobre todo en los de colores claros. De otro lado, no se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en la emisión de fluorescencia del semen azoospérmico con respecto al normospérmico.

The aim of this study was to identify the combination of wavelength and filter that best detects tooth and bone, and to determine which biological materials (enamel, dental root or bone) have highest fluorescence intensity when exposed to an alternate light source (ALS). Tooth and bone samples were lighted with ALS and photographed. Adobe Photoshop™ and ImageJ™ softwares were used for image analysis. Data obtained by measuring the photograph pixels were subjected to analysis of variance. The mean values of significant effects were compared by the Tukey test. In all tests, the significance level was set at p≤0.05 and the values calculated by the SAS system. The results showed that the best combination for detecting tooth and bone is an illumination wavelength of 455 nm with an orange filter. The fluorescence of dental root is greater than that of enamel, which in turn is greater than that of bone. The biological material had markedly higher fluorescence than the inert material. This knowledge can help the forensic expert to screen and detect biological materials, for example in situations where there are fragmented teeth and small bones, both at the scene and in the laboratory.

Forensic Archeology is the application of techniques and principles of archeology in the pursuit of examining a crime or incident with legal interest. A wide range of analytical studies are employed in examining archeological remains. X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy remains to be one of the most used techniques for rapid examination of trace evidence typically found on an archeological crime scene. Studies of interest generally include finding trace elements from various sources, samples, and different environmental conditions and distinguishing whether a skeletal remains under examination is human, animal, or marine species. The present study has been designed to focus on the application of XRF in archeological and anthropological evidences such as the examination of human skeletal and dental remains, determination of species, examination of soil, ceramics, paintings, coins, and so on. The advantage of XRF as derived from the reported literature is that it is a non‐destructive technique making it ideal for forensic analysis and in situ examination. The study also discusses the factors affecting forensic investigations of archeological evidences and the limitations of XRF.
