Analysis of the corrosion scales formed on API 5L X70 and X80 steel pipe in the presence of CO2

Abstract: Longitudinal welded joints samples of X70 and X80 API grade steel pipes were exposed to a deaerated 1% NaCl solution containing CO 2 , at temperatures in the range of 25 °C to 80 °C for 48 hours. Analogous samples were exposed to the adjacent vapour phase. The layer of corrosion products which formed on the base metal and welded regions of the samples was investigated using mass loss determinations, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion products formed in tests at 60 °C and were com… Show more

“…They are usually considered as more cost-effective and safer than any other types of steel. However, such pipelines used for the exploitation and transport of oil and gas are usually buried underground, undersea, or immersed in marine salty water, where they can get severely corroded [4][5][6][7]. Thus, single or multilayer protective coatings are generally used for external and internal corrosion protection of pipelines in gas/ oil transmission and distribution.…”

“…Despite its relatively limited corrosion resistance, carbon steel is used in large tonnages in marine applications, chemical processing, petroleum production and refining, construction and metal processing equipment 1,2 . The economic consequences of corrosion of iron and its alloys in various industrial sectors, including oil and gas operations, are investigated 3 .…”

“…In a zinc phosphating bath these equilibrium may be represented as: (2) A certain amount of free phosphoric acid must be present to repress the hydrolysis and to keep the bath stable for effective deposition of phosphate at the microcathodic sites 23,24 . Temperature and immersion time are main effective parameters in zinc phosphate conversion coatings 23 .…”
