Analysis of the association between marital relationships and health problems: An interactional perspective.

Abstract: This article reviews the evidence for a relationship between 3 types of marital variables (marital status, marital adjustment, and marital interaction) and health problems (etiology, course/outcome/treatment) as well as the effect that health problems have on marriage. The mechanisms responsible for these associations also are evaluated. The evidence suggest that marital variables affect health status but that the effect is indirect and nonspecific. “…Лонгитюдные исследования брака хоро-шо подходят для изучения последствий, непосредственно не связанных с браком. Согласно проведенным исследованиям, физическое здоровье [Burman, Margolin, 1992], депрессия [Beach, Sandeen, O'Leary, 1990] и адаптация детей [Markman, Jones-Leonard, 1985] влияют на качество брака и его стабильность. Без суще-ственных дополнительных усилий исследователи могут оценить эти последствия в рамках лонгитюдного изучения брака.…”

“…More specifically, research shows that negative relationship events like conflict tend to have a larger impact than positive events (Gottman, 1994;see Baumeister, Bratslavsky, Finkenauer, & Vohs, 2001 for review), and conflict interactions are often used in lab-based studies of relationship functioning to infer relational health (e.g., Gottman, 1994;Levenson & Gottman, 1985;Overall, Fletcher, Simpson, & Sibley, 2009). Conflict can be detrimental to individual (Burman & Margolin, 1992;Umberson, Williams, Powers, Liu, & Needham, 2006) and relationship (Gottman & Levenson, 2000;Rusbult, Johnson, & Morrow, 1986) health when not handled effectively. Whether or not a conflict is destructive may partly depend upon its immediate emotional impact.…”
