Analysis of students’ difficulties about work and energy

Abstract: Identification of students’ difficulties is an important part of designing a quality learning. This research used survey method that aims to identify the difficulties experienced by students in understanding the concept of work and energy. The research subjects consisted of 142 undergraduate students in physics education (46 first-year students, 39 second-year students, and 57 third-year students). Data collection was carried out from 2018-2019. There are 10 multiple choices questions that are used to uncover … Show more

“…(Rahmatina, Sutopo, & Wartono, 2018). Beberapa penelitian menunjukkan siswa masih kesulitan memahami pokok bahasan usaha dan energi (Dalaklioglu, Demirici, & Şekercioglu, 2015;Rivaldo, Taqwa, Zainuddin, & Faizah, 2020). Pemahaman siswa pada pokok bahasan usaha dan energi perlu lebih ditingkatkan sehingga siswa memiliki pemahaman dan kemampuan menyelesaikan permasalahan gerak dengan baik.…”

“…One of the research questions explored in this topic is identifying conceptual knowledge about physics performed by Indonesian students [106,107,[224][225][226][227] or physics teachers [106,[228][229][230]. They investigated conceptual physics understanding on mechanics [107,227,231,232], electricity [224,228,230], magnetism [226], fluid [104,229], work and energy [225,233,234], thermodynamics [106], and modern physics [235]. Within the context of the Indonesian PER literature, we propagate conceptual understanding in another form of multiple representations [225,236,237], including external representation [105], mental model [238], drawing ability on free-body diagram [239,240], and mathematical representation [232].…”

“…The results of Maison et al (2020) and Samsudin et al (2021) researches explain that the sub-topic with high misconceptions is the Law of Conservation of Mechanical Energy and the work-energy theorem. Students' difficulties on this topic include: (1) applying the concept of work-energy to physics cases; (2) understanding work as a product of force and displacement; (3) understanding of work relationship with mechanical energy; (4) understanding the concept of potential energy on spring; and (5) applying the theory of work-energy (Muchoyimah et al, 2016;Pramesti et al, 2020;Rivaldo et al, 2020). The problem of understanding the concept on work and energy topic need to be followed up with proper learning.…”
