Analysis of spatial patterns in buildings (access analysis) as an insight into social structure: examples from the Scottish Atlantic Iron Age

Abstract: Clearly the pattern of space in buildings can be expected to relate to the way that buildings are used to structure and reproduce social relations. As an archaeologist, wishing to infer social structure by its reflection in the building pattern, one may hope the relation may be reasonably direct. Here the formal geometrical method of access analysis is used to elucidate the pattern in a distinctive kind of prehistoric settlement form, and thence to elucidate the social structure which both produced it and was … Show more

“…Hence layouts of house plans from the varied time frame and places can be studied on a similar basis. Societies which might vary in their type of physical configuration and degree to which the ordering of space appears as a conspicuous dimension of culture can all be compared on a similar basis (Foster, 1989).…”

“…La artificialidad del medio construido ha sido destacada por muchos investigadores (Rapoport 1969;Kus 1983;Foster 1989;Hingley 1990;Parker Pearson y Richards 1994), no meramente como respuesta a las necesidades del medio, sino como un microcosmo de la sociedad y una herramienta para comprender la estructura social. Sanders (1990: 43) afirma que "the individual behavioural decisions, which reflect more general cultural values are embodied in the formation and use of the built environment.…”

“…Space syntax analysis is of proven utility for characterizing scale, integration, and relative asymmetry of spatial connectivity within archaeological settlements (e.g., Banning and Byrd, 1989;Dawson, 2002;Fairclough, 1992;Ferguson, 1996;Foster, 1989;Hopkins, 1987;Moore, 1992;Parker Pearson and Richards, 1994;Shapiro, 1999;Van Dyke, 1999). Its graph-based schematic representations, however, visually dissociate analysis from the architectural plan, making its legibility and interpretation less intuitive.…”
