After India's independence in 1947, the new policy framework imposed by the government would encourage the industrialization of independent India. The creation of these industries was associated with the construction of housing for their workers. This article examines the work of Balkrishna V Doshi in the settlement for the Gujarat State Fertilizers Corporation, carried out during the first stage of his architectural discourse. It is an architecture committed to the country both from a perspective of adaptation to the climate and attention to the social needs of the time.It employs a case study method that involves the analysis of existing writings, plans and photographs of the project and an interview with the architect. Documentation has been obtained after a trip to the site of work, consulting the library of the Faculty of Architecture of CEPT University, the documentary archive of the architect in Sangath. Drawings have been developed by the authors while having a conversation about the project with Balkrishna Doshi in his office.It concludes that the built project achieves an urban space capable of maintaining the identity and cultural values of its country. In addition to being exemplary in terms of in terms of climate sensitivity and social meaningfulness, it reaches, in 1968, most of the parameters that define a smart and sustainable city today.

Most notable vernacular settlements of the past had a potential of generating stimulating ambiance because of their “organicness”. The understanding of the “Nature of order” in this informality can identify the factors or parameters generating the definite spatial character appropriate for the time and place. The spatial character generates the spirit of the place, what we call the genius loci. This paper analyses the relationship of spatial organization and ambiance of the old city settlements in hot and dry climatic regions of two selected cities of India − Ahmedabad and Jodhpur at various levels. Both the selected cities are informal in nature and rich with its ambiance. Space syntax and digital simulations are used to decode the parameters of the spatial organization. The spatial morphology is analysed using tools such as justified graph analysis, visibility graph analysis, isovists analysis, agent movement analysis and sunlight study. The result of the study is summarised in tabular format and presented in a graphical manner for better understanding. This analysis is valuable in the derivation of the constants and variables to define the learning from the vernacular spatial organization.

PurposeThe focus of this paper is the changes in domestic social patterns from independence (1956) in Khartoum and their effects on domestic architecture, analysed using space syntax analysis. The built representation of the political change in Khartoum, which had led economic, cultural and social transformation, has not been well investigated. The domestic architecture is envisaged here to reflect the change from a liberal and secular British colonial lifestyle to a post-colonial native conservative and religious one.Design/methodology/approachThe study explored twenty representative samples from the two eras in order to reveal the hidden nature of these patterns by employing space syntax analysis, particularly convex mapping. This analysis attempted to both decipher space transition and to identify patterns. Interviews were conducted to interpret the social meaning of these configurations and to factor in the historical context of the transition.FindingsThe analytical comparisons revealed that these socio-cultural changes had subtle effects on the transformations experienced in the use and spatial organization. The change shows the emerging dominance of privacy: the relationship with exterior had started to diminish, and some interior spaces were redefined. This privacy centred patterns also, in many post-colonial cases, have pushed the core of integration deeper in the access graph.Social implicationsThe study sheds lights on the transition in the Sudanese society, reflected on the spatial arrangement of houses and traditions. It is directed to the Sudanese as well as regional societies who passed the transition before and after colonial eras.Originality/valueThe enclosed j-graph study on houses' plans is original and haven't been investigated using this space syntax approach.
