Analysis of space charge formation in LDPE in the presence of crosslinking byproducts

Abstract: Cross-linking byproducts are suspected to be the main contributing factor in space charge formation observed in XLPE. To investigate the mechanism behind this phenomenon, low density polyethylene was soaked into three main crosslinking byproducts, acetophenone, -methylstyrene and cumyl alcohol, and space charge measurements were performed using the Pulse Electroacoustic technique (PEA). It has been found that soaking LDPE in cumyl alcohol introduces more charges into the system, with homocharges and heterochar… Show more

“…Numerous recent experimental studies have attempted to diagnose the electrical tree in XLPE cables [12][13][14][15]. The effect of partial discharges on the electrical properties of the cable has been studied in a lot of investigations [16,17]. Much work has been carried out, and the chemical modifications generated by aging and its consequences on the mechanical and electrical properties of XLPE [10,[18][19][20][21] were analyzed.…”

“…The accumulation of space charge can lead to the localized electric field enhancement, which will affect the properties of dielectric, such as conductivity, breakdown, aging, etc. [7][8][9] Space charge characteristics are influenced by many factors [10][11][12][13][14], such as temperature, additives, moisture, interface, morphology. When oil paper is thermally aged, the inter-unit linkages in cellulose chains are broken and other properties including permittivity and conductivity change [3,15].…”

“…Space charge characteristics were affected by many factors, such as temperature, moisture, additive, electrode materials, crystallinity, and so on [22][23][24][25][26]. Although Figure 2 and Figure 9 showed that positive charge injected easier than negative charge from the Al electrode, and Figure 2 indicated that there was no significant difference between the behaviors of negative and positive charge in terms of their quickness, the conclusions could not be drawn as the diversity among oil-paper samples or experiments could not be neglected.…”
