Abstract: Space charge is a threat to insulation materials and oil-paper insulation gradually degrades in service. The degradation of cellulose affects space charge formation, accumulation and dissipation, and the presence of space charge affects the performance of dielectric. In this paper, the effect of thermal aging on space charge behaviors and other properties including permittivity, conductivity, and tensile strength was investigated. Oil-paper samples were aged at a hot spot temperature (180℃). During thermal agi… Show more

“…However, the dynamics of interfacial charges in fresh oil and aged oil samples were quite different, which resulted from the difference in moisture content and oil conductivity. The PEA test research results from In 2015, the most recent studies by Zhou et al (single layer, 130 µm, 10 kV/mm) showed that the formation of space charge by unaged and aged oil-paper were consequently different under low electric field conditions [23]. Along with the degradation of cellulose, more traps inside paper samples were generated, more charge (especially positive charges) was trapped, and the electric field distortion was more severe as the ageing progressed ( Figure 12).…”

“…The electric field between column-column electrodes is quasi-homogeneous, which is much lower than the critical value of field-emission tunneling. The injection current is expressed as [ 43 , 44 ]: where Φ ( x ) is the barrier potential for charge injection, E e is the electrode field, and ε r is relative permittivity of the samples. The barrier potential at the electrode-dielectric interface is expressed by the following equation [ 43 , 44 ]: where Φ m is the work function of the metal electrode, χ is the electron affinity, q is the electron charge, and x is the distance.…”

“…On the one hand, the existence, migration, and dissipation of space charges affect the electric field distribution in the dielectric directly. This can either weaken or strengthen the local electric field in the dielectric and thus affects the breakdown voltage of the dielectric [129][130][131]. On the other hand, the trapping, detrapping, and recombination of space charges may cause emission of photons or release local mechanical energy, which can break the chemical bonds in the dielectric and thus affect the insulation characteristics of the dielectric [74,132].…”
