Analysis of Sites and Causes of Failures of Irradiation in Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Intact Uterine Cervix

Abstract: An analysis of the records of 916 patients who received radiotherapy for invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the intact uterine cervix from January 1964 through December 1969 revealed that 94% of the central and regional failures will occur within 3 years of treatment. Survival rates were as follows: Stage I, 91%; Stage IIA, 82%; Stage IIB, 65%; Stage IIIA, 54%; and Stage IIIB, 40%. The incidences of central and regional failures in Stages I through III are: Stages I and IIA; central 2% and regional 4.5%; Stag… Show more

“…For example, 20-50% of patients with stage IIB cervical cancer and 50-75% of patients with stage III cervical cancer suffered local recurrence. [12][13][14] To decrease the local recurrence, several strategies were adopted. For example, hypoxic sensitizers, 15,16 hyperbaric oxygen, 17 radioprotector, 18 neutron therapy, 19 hyperthermia, 20 and hyperfractionation 21 were attempted to decrease the local recurrence.…”

“…It is obvious that enhanced local control might improve disease-free survival. [5][6][7][8] In order to improve the loco-regional control; chemotherapy can be incorporated along with the conventional radiation. Concurrent chemo radiation is one of the newer modality of treatment which has shown promising results in various studies.…”

“…Once a week during radiotherapy, or before the initiation of chemotherapy, CBC, liver function and renal function tests were conducted. In the case of an absolute neutrophil count less than 1,000/mm 3 or a platelet count less than 100,000/mm 3 ; the chemoradiotherapy was delayed until recovery. …”

“…Although radiotherapy has been widely used in the treatment of locally advanced cervical cancer, radiotherapy alone resulted in treatment failure in 20~50% patients with stage IIB and 50~75% of those with stage IIIB or higher stage (2). It is well known that the treatment failure mainly developed within 3 years after radiotherapy, with many of the local recurrences developing in the parametrium (3).…”
