The efficacy of concurrent cisplatin and 5-flurouracil chemotherapy and radiation therapy for locally advanced cancer of the uterine cervix

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT) using 5-flurouracil (5-FU) and cisplatin for locally advanced cervical cancer. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 57 patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (stage IIB-IVA and bulky IB2-IIA tumor) who underwent the CCRT at Dong-A University Hospital from January 1997 to June 2007. The CCRT consisted of 5-FU, cisplatin and pelvic radiation. Every three weeks, 75 mg/m 2 cisplatin was administered on the first day of each cycl… Show more

“…Although the patients of this study included high incidence of patients with bulky tumors (73%), CCRT with low-dose daily cisplatin showed high local control rate as 94.1% as the primary treatment. However during follow-up period, we had 30 recurrences (58.8%) including 20 patients (39.2%) with local failure, which was higher than results of previously reported investigators (18-24.2%) [4,10,16,17]. Duration of radiotherapy was relatively longer in this study, but this may not be the cause of relatively higher recurrence rate of this study.…”

“…The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) has established CCRT as the standard of treatment for cervical cancer in patients with high-risk factors. Based on previous studies [ 1 , 3 – 6 , 16 ], we used cisplatin alone in most of the patients enrolled in this study, totaling 71 cases (72.45%) with CCRT. However, the 5-year OS and PFS rates were lower than in previous studies.…”

“…Despite a few contradictory reports, 7-9 recent reviews strongly suggest that CCRT improves OS and PFS of cervical cancer patients, whether or not platinum is used, with absolute benefits of 10% and 13%, respectively. [10][11][12] Like previous studies, [1][2][3][4][5]8,13 we used cisplatin alone in most patients and administered cisplatin combination regimens in some cases later in this study.…”
