Analysis of Salem Low-Tension Waterflood Test

Abstract: A test of a low-tension waterflood process was conducted in a single five-spot pattern in the Salem field. The presence of a regional pressure gradient across the pattern is believed to have caused migration of injected chemicals and displaced oil from the pattern area, resulting in less encouraging recovery than had been anticipated. Introduction A comprehensive discussion of the results and performance of the Salem Unit low-tension waterflood pilot has perf… Show more

“…Application of emulsion as an EOR agent has been reported in earlier studies . The low oil recoveries because of poor emulsion stability caused by the coalescence of droplets has limited its use. , Thus, the use of nanotechnology in emulsions can be a breakthrough in EOR, as it has the potential to revolutionize the current scenario of oil production from the matured oil fields . Nanotechnology, in general, refers to matters of atomic and molecular scale (nanometers), such as nanoemulsions .…”

“…All of these unusual phenomena suggested severe challenges to oil recovery from water injection. Strange and Talash, Whiteley and Ware, and Widmyer et al have also reported poor oil recovery due to problems associated with the undesirable formation of stable macroemulsions in the oil fields. They observed formation of high-viscosity emulsions in the reservoir of homogeneous permeability, which required very high energy for flow in porous media.…”

“…Alkali and surfactant concentrations and salinity are the main factors influencing the stability of the emulsion in the ASP composition because they can affect the nature of the interfacial film and the viscosity and salinity of ASP system. Poor emulsion stability caused by the coalescence of droplets has limited their use in EOR . Thus, it is necessary to study the various factors of emulsion stability.…”
