Palemsari Hamlet (Umbulharjo Village, Cangkringan District, Sleman Regency) is one of areas located in Southern Slope of Mt. Merapi, which was directly affected by the eruption cycle of Mt. Merapi. The aftereffect of 2010 eruption had reduced land productivity, making it less suitable for crop cultivation. Therefore, this study was aimed to re-evaluate the land suitability of Palemsari Hamlet, particularly for cassava cultivation, after 10 years of eruption. This study was carried out from June – November 2021 in Palemsari Hamlet. Physiographic conditions and soil properties were observed through survey. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively and spatially to determine the characteristics through a series of laboratory analysis. This data was used to determine the class of land suitability. Results showed that the land suitability in PalemsariHamlet was considered as moderately suitable (S2) for cassava cultivation. This area was found to have less suitable soil texture due to the high percentage of sand fraction. According to this result, the soil condition in Palemsari Hamlet is potential to be used for cassava cultivation with the support of organic matter application to improve its physical properties. This recommendation could be beneficial for the future land use planning in the affected areas of Mt. Merapi eruption.

The successful evacuation of vulnerable people during emergencies is a significant challenge. In the case of a Mount Merapi eruption, limited private vehicles in the community and a lack of evacuation transport and government volunteers led some people to walk to the meeting area. Consequently, low walking speeds by vulnerable persons may increase the risk and delay. Therefore, the mutual assistance strategy is proposed to support vulnerable people by evacuating them with young people. This grouping was simulated using an AnyLogic software with the agent-based model concept. Pedestrians and vehicles played the roles of significant agents in this experiment. Evacuation departure rate, actual walking speed, group size, route, and coordination were crucial agent parameters. Human behavior and agent distribution were investigated using stakeholders and local community interviews. We measured the walking speed directly to find the independent and group speed. Afterward, we developed three scenarios and models for the evacuation process. A traffic approach was used in the simulation. The results revealed that this mutual assistance model is effective for the rapid evacuation and risk reduction of vulnerable communities where successful evacuation rates have improved. The highest arrival rating was obtained by the Model 3, which was assembled and well-coordinated from home. These findings are a novelty in the volcano context and reflect all categories of vulnerable behavior involving the elderly, disabled, children, and pregnant mothers. The model will benefit disaster management studies and authorities’ policies for sustainable evacuation planning and aging population mitigation.

Tornadoes are often seen as a way of life in the Great Plains region of the United States, with many stories of deadly storms originating before the 20th century. Because of this historic connection between people and their environment, residents of states such as Oklahoma develop distinctive sociocultural relationships to extreme weather, particularly associating tornadoes with social memory and regional identity. In this paper, I assert that shared memories of historic tornadoes are impactful to Oklahomans' regional identity as it relates to residents' relationships with risk. Multiple qualitative methods, including interview and archival research were used in order to identify the importance of this relationship to Oklahomans as a social group. Much importance is also placed on connecting the present to the past, and many Oklahomans have adopted tornadoes as a symbol of strength. While memories of these tornadic events do not negate the risks of living in a potentially dangerous environment, they also do not imply that risks should be avoided. Rather, facing these risks is seen as a practice in endurance that many Oklahomans believe they were built to face.
