Existing approaches to indoor environmental quality in single-family residential buildings have been described, identifying their optimal preferred parameters for maintaining a human-healthy environment. The energy requirements for maintaining basic building systems (lighting, cooking, heating, ventilation, cooling) have been analyzed. Passive and active sources of energy production have been analyzed, prosumer buildings have been considered, and methods of obtaining maximum energy in winter periods and avoiding overheating of the building in summer periods have been discussed. Process schemes of using active shadow structures as an integral element with other systems acquiring energy from RES in single-family residential buildings have been presented. Architectural aspects of the use of energy-active shadow structures in residential buildings (single – family houses) have been presented together with alternative solutions. This paper presents process diagrams of the use of energy-active shadow integrated with other renewable energy sources used in single-family buildings, such as: BIPV, PVT and heat pumps, benefiting indoor environmental quality. Architectural considerations for the use of energy-active shadow structures in single-family homes have been presented along with alternative solutions. The purpose of this paper is to present a concept (especially effective in the summer) for an additional way to harvest electricity from energy-active shadows in single-family houses.

Modelling of Solar Irradiance Incident on Building Envelopes in Polish Climatic Conditions: The Impact on Energy Performance Indicators of Residential Buildings

In this study, we use the data of Polish typical meteorological years and 15 transposition models to obtain global solar irradiance on sloped surfaces to calculate solar irradiance on external building partitions, solar gains, heating demands, and primary nonrenewable energy for heating and domestic hot water (EPH+W) of two typical Polish residential buildings, each for two variants in five locations. In relation to TMYs, annual solar gains were lower by −31% and −36% on average in a single and multifamily building, respectively, and the annual heating demands increased by 9% and 16%, respectively. Consequently, averaged EPH+W in relation to TMYs rose by 1.4 kWh/m2 and 4.5 kWh/m2, respectively. The mean differences between TMYs and the new method from the recently published EN-ISO 52010 standard for test Building 1 were 1.6 and 1.2 kWh/m2, for Variants 1 and 2, respectively. Similarly, for test Building 2, the mean differences were 5.1 kWh/m2 and 3.9 kWh/m2, respectively. This means that the simulation model that is chosen has a visible impact on a building’s energy performance indicators and its rating without any changes in the physical structure and use of the building.

Increasing consciousness to address future concerns is a challenging subject, noticed considerably by policymakers and investors. Investigation of energy use in residential buildings in terms of quantity and sources of energy was the main focus of this study. Indeed, the paper was aimed to study the role of contextual factors on two points: the energy demand and the spreading of renewable technologies in the residential sector. It was theory‐driven research to highlight some future concerns. The first theory was to reveal how the growth of single‐family houses versus multi‐family houses could affect the growth of energy consumption and the application of renewable technologies. The second theory was built to highlight that spreading energy measures to increase efficiency or introducing a new energy carrier should be embedded in the context of new construction activities or in a template of renovation projects. The third theory was to emphasize the priority of thinking about managing the changes in residential buildings because of the lasting impact of the decision about the type of building. Finally, the purpose of the ongoing transition was argued to highlight that the growth of renewable technologies has not been necessarily aligned with getting away from fossil fuels.
