Abstract-This paper presents an improved method for microwave nondestructive dielectric measurement of layered media using a parallel-plate waveguide probe. The method bases on measuring the S parameter S 11 or reflection coefficient from the N -layer media over the range of 1 to 10 GHz. Formulation for the aperture admittance is presented which allows the solving of the inverse problem of extracting the complex permittivity for two cases of the media, (1) one that terminates into an infinite half-space, (2) one that terminates into a sheet conductor. Our theoretical analysis allows the study of the effects of air gaps and slab thickness on the probe measurements. Through numerical simulations, the ability to use the proposed method for dielectric spectroscopy and thickness evaluation of layered media is demonstrated.

Capítulo 1Introducción y Objetivos.La tecnología de microondas debe su origen al diseño y desarrollo del radar, y sufrió una enorme expansión durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En las primeras etapas de su desarrollo, la invención de generadores de microondas como el klystron o el magnetrón, abrieron la región de frecuencia de los gigahertzios del espectro electromagnético a los ingenieros de comunicaciones. Las microondas constituyen sólo una pequeña parte del espectro electromagnético, pero su uso ha llegado a ser cada vez más importante en la investigación de las propiedades de materiales.Cada material posee un conjunto único de características eléctricas que dependen de sus propiedades dieléctricas, y que determinan cómo dicho material se va a comportar ante la presencia de un campo electromagnético. La medida precisa de dichas propiedades dieléctricas proporciona a los científicos e ingenieros una información muy valiosa para poder incorporar ese material a su aplicación, para poder realizar diseños precisos o para poder monitorizar un determinado proceso y disponer de un mejor control de calidad [Bru90, Che04, Den73, Kom01].Así, la caracterización dieléctrica de materiales es esencial para la adecuada selección e implantación de un determinado material 2 CAPÍTULO 1 para ser utilizado en una aplicación científica, médica o industrial [Cha90]. En concreto, el conocimiento de las propiedades dieléctricas de los materiales es necesario para poder evaluar el comportamiento de guías, lentes, radomos, antenas, resonadores, circuitos, etc [Agi01, Voe97].La medida de las propiedades dieléctricas de tejidos biológicos es crucial en medicina para detección de cáncer, aplicación de hipertermia y diatermia por microondas, angioplastia, etc.; así como para realizar estimaciones de la tasa de absorción de la energía electromagnética en el cuerpo humano, tan de moda ante el aumento incesante del uso de la telefonía móvil en nuestros días [Ath82, Jai94, Thu92].También, para poder mantener el ritmo de expansión de la tecnología inalámbrica o la industria electrónica, los fabricantes están desarrollando materiales innovadores que mejoran las capacidades de los sistemas, y por ello hay una necesidad de conocer de forma precisa las características eléctricas de estos nuevos materiales [Bak01, Wei96].Por otra parte, el conocimiento de las propiedades dieléctricas es una herramienta muy útil para la investigación de los mecanismos intermoleculares e intramoleculares de los materiales compuestos. was calculated to determine the spectral contents of the incident and the reflected pulses. The parameters z, t a , and t b were chosen to capture as much of both pulses as possible, following the procedure described elsewhere [11]. The computed ratio of the Fourier transform of the reflected pulse to that of the incident pulse is denoted here by r TD ( 0 ), the subscript TD indicating its emergence from time-domain analysis. NUMERICAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONFor the sake of illustration, the following values were selected for the constitutive parameters of the dielectric-magnetic half-space: Thus, attention had to be focused on the anomalous spectral regime 0 ʦ [236.1, 316.8] nm. In this regime, the reflection coefficient r( 0 ) for Possibility A is the reciprocal of that for Possibility B. The two possibilities can therefore be unambiguously distinguished from one another.The carrier wavelength was chosen as car ϭ 240 nm. The pulse duration is 3 fs and its 3-dB band is 0 ʦ [218, 261] nm. Therefore the anomalous spectral regime was substantively covered by the time-domain calculations. The segment sizes used, ⌬z ϭ 5 nm and ⌬t ϭ 0.015 fs, were adequate for the chosen constitutive parameters, but obviously would be totally inadequate in the resonance bands of r ( 0 ) and r ( 0 ). Possibility A is clearly nonsensical. It implies transport of energy in the half-space z Ն z ᐉ toward the interface z ϭ z ᐉ . Not surprisingly, therefore, (2), (5), and (6) Figure 1 presents the computed values of ͉r( 0 )͉ obtained from (2), (5), and (6) for Possibility B (i.e., when nЉ( 0 ) Ն 0 is guaranteed for all 0 ). The computed values of ͉r TD ( 0 )͉ are also shown therein. The two sets of magnitudes compare very well for 0 Յ 290 nm. Examination of the refracted pulse also showed that it transported energy away from the interface z ϭ z ᐉ , which corroborates the observations of Ziolkowski and Heyman [4].yielded ͉r( 0 )͉ Ͼ 1 for all 0 ʦ [236.1, 316.8] nm.Thus, time-domain analysis validates the conclusion that n( 0 ) must be selected in frequency-domain research in such a way that nЉ( 0 ) Ն 0-irrespective of the sign of nЈ( 0 ).
