The piled raft foundations are widely used in infrastructure built on soft soil to reduce the settlement and enhance the bearing capacity. However, these foundations pose a potential risk of failure, if dynamic traffic loading and ground conditions are not adequately accounted in the construction phase. The ground conditions are complex because of frequent groundwater fluctuations. The drawdown of the water table profoundly influences the settlement and load sharing capacity of piled raft foundation. Further, the dynamic loading can also pose a potential risk to these foundations. In this paper, the two-dimensional finite element method (FEM) is employed to analyze the impact of water drawdown and dynamic loading on the stability of piled raft. The seismic response of piled raft is also discussed. The stresses and deformations occurring in and around the raft structure are evaluated. The results demonstrate that water drawdown has a significant effect on the stability and seismic response of piled raft. Various foundation improvement methods are assessed, such as the use of geotextile and increasing thickness of the pile cap, which aids of limiting the settlement.

Municipal solid waste management is a growing worldwide challenge. Landfill mining is a promising technique to reduce MSW landfills. In the present study, arbitrary embankments made of different MSW fractions are analyzed to find the safety factor of their slopes. Properties of Municipal solid waste fines (MSWF), Shredded MSW, MSW Incineration Ash, and MSW having particles less than 35 mm are used in the analysis. For doing the same, finite element-based application 'Plaxis-2D' is used. The safety of slopes is assessed while the water table is inserted, and a uniform load is applied to the embankment to establish how well they will perform in critical situations. It was found that the slope made of shredded MSW is most safe due to its low density and high friction angle, while the least safe slope is made of MSW having less than 35 mm fractions.

Effect of Foundation Flexibility on the Seismic Performance of a High-Rise Structure under Far-Field and Near-Field Earthquakes

In this study, the seismic performance of a 20-storey steel structure with a mat foundation located on layered soil is investigated under an array of strong ground excitations, which includes 6 far-fault and 6 near-fault earthquakes. Eight different modes for soil layering have been considered in the numerical simulation. FLAC 2D nonlinear platform has been used to model the near-realistic behavior. To this end, hundred lines of codes and subroutines have been developed in this platform to perform the analysis. The results of the analyzes include the absolute displacement of the floors, the ratio of the relative displacement of the floors, the shear force, the axial force, and the bending moment of the columns. It was concluded that for a 20-story structure on a mat foundation under both far-field and near-field earthquakes, the most reliable type of soil is the dense sandy soil and the most critical case is the soft clay soil. It was also observed that the near-field strong ground motions have imposed more critical structural responses compared to far-field records.
