Analysis of petroleum for trace metals. Determination of trace quantities of manganese in petroleum and petroleum products by heated vaporization atomic absorption

Abstract: A method is described for the determination of manganese by heated vaporization atomic absorption which is capable of measuring manganese directly in petroleum matrices in concentrations from 10-300 ng of manganese per gram of sample. The technique of micro standard additions is used to overcome matrix effects. A discussion of heated vaporization atomic absorption as related to the characteristics of a Varían Techtron Model 63 Carbon Rod Atomizer is included. The precision of the method is calculated from data… Show more

“…The heated vaporization atomic absorption procedure was developed with a Varian-Techtron Model 63 Carbon Rod Atomizer (CRA-63, Varian-Techtron Corp. Palo Alto, Calif.) mounted in place of the burner. The components and function of the CRA-63 have been previously described (22,25). The spectrometer was modified by raising the monochromator and second lens turrent 1% inch to the plane of the hollow cathode lamp and workhead as described previously (25).…”

“…Optimization of Parameters. The characteristics of the Model 63 Carbon Rod Analyzer have been previously described with regard to the power relationships to instrument settings (19). For ashing, the temperature of the atomizer corresponding to a power input of 0.13 kW is adequate to ash each of the sample types investigated in this study.…”

“…This is a vigorous reaction between concentrated alkaline H2O2 and CH2O to which a polyhydric phenol such as pyrogallol is added (18). There are some spectrometric (19,20) and chemical (21) data suggesting a singlet oxygen formation. However, details of the mechanism and the exact nature of the emitters are not clear.…”
