Analysis of Partial Discharges in Electrical Tree Growth Under Very Low Frequency (VLF) Excitation Through Pulse Sequence and Nonlinear Time Series Analysis

Abstract: Electrical treeing is the main degradation mechanism in high voltage polymeric insulation, that leads to power system plant failure and the loss of electricity supply. Electrical trees grow under partial discharge (PD) activity, which can be measured and analyzed to understand and characterize electrical tree growth. In this work, PD measurements were analyzed for electrical trees grown in epoxy resin needleplane samples under very low frequency (VLF, 0.1 Hz) voltage excitation. VLF is interesting as it is use… Show more

“…This tool considers the relationship of each pulse with its neighbors to avoid the loss of information on the physical phenomenon associated with the variation in the electric field. PSA proposes various patterns to analyze, but in the case of this work, the main analyzed pattern was ∆U (n−1) /∆t (n−1) v/s ∆U n /∆t n , which, due to its sensitivity, has previously been used to describe electrical arborization [22,23].…”

“…When electrical trees are initiated, they grow until they bridge the entire insulation material, resulting in catastrophic failure of the power system plant. Electrical trees are strongly related to partial discharge (PD) activity, which is usually characterized using techniques such as phase-resolved PD (PRPD) patterns [ 2 , 3 ], and, to a lesser extent, pulse sequence analysis (PSA) [ 4 ], pulse waveform analysis [ 5 ], and nonlinear time series analysis [ 6 , 7 ].…”
