Analysis of Marine Pollution of Ports and Jetties in Rivers State, Nigeria

Abstract: Ports and jetties complex operations come with various forms of pollutions. The analysis of marine pollution from ports becomes very necessary and complicated due to the various types of pollution, sources, effects and different characteristics. The sources of environmental pollution other than ships and from industrial activities in port and jetties were critically looked at and analyzed. A complete review of the environmental pollution in ports and the tools to assess and minimize such negative environmental… Show more

“…Fish that swallow this toxic water die, become sick, and endanger the lives of all those who swallow it. The economic impact of this form of pollution is far-reaching as it affects the sea ecosystem [35,36]. One of the industries that is most vulnerable to this form of pollution is fishing, and the local economies of coastal cities that depend on it can be extremely endangered.…”

“…Solid waste generated in seaports and on ships, such as glass, paper, cardboard, aluminum, steel cans, plastics, etc., disposed of in the marine environment, pose a threat to marine organisms, people, coastal communities, and the seawater industry [35]. Seaports are paying increasing attention to the way they dispose waste generated in their processes and on ships that dock at the seaport.…”

“…According to [5], marine pollution comes from ships' discharge of oily water from the hull of ships, organisms from the ballast, accidental discharge of oil due to operational activities, and et cetera. Industry around the harbor or docks can also have a role in seawater pollution by dumping hazardous chemicals into the sea [5]. Have a detrimental impact on ecosystems, ships, and human health.…”

“…This can be done by complying with the rules and arrangements made by national and international organizations that care about the environment, especially the maritime environment. Industries around ports or docks can also contribute to the pollution of the marine environment by releasing hazardous chemicals into the sea (Nitonye, S., Uyi, O, 2018).…”
