Analysis of Longevity Traits in Holstein Cattle: A Review

Abstract: Dairy cow longevity is an essential economic trait that can supplement the breeding value of production traits, which is related to the herd time and lifetime milk yield of dairy cows. However, longevity is a relatively difficult trait to select for dairy cow breeding due to low heritability and numerous influence factors of the longevity in dairy cows. Longevity trait has been used as an important breeding target of a comprehensive selection index in many dairy developed countries; however, it has not been in… Show more

“…The highest indicators of productive life, the number of lactation and lifetime milk yield were obtained from mares daughters whose mares mothers had record milk yields for lactation from 7000 kg to 8000 kg of milk. Thus, the results of the studies carried out showed a direct dependence of the mother's milk productivity on the record milk yield and the duration of the productive life of mare daughters, which coincides with the opinion on this issue when studying the correlation of these indicators of Holstein cows [13].…”

“…Therefore, owing to the ambiguity, we define the following terms; longevity, herd life and productive life. Hu et al (2021) defines longevity in dairy cows as the time from a cow’s first calving to when she exits the herd or does not have sufficient productivity. Herd life refers to the days from birth of a calf, produces her first calf; and to her culling or death ( Hu et al, 2021 ; Zhang et al, 2021 ) and productive life refers to the days from the cow’s first calving to culling or death ( Raguz et al, 2011 ).…”

“…In Páchová et al and Raguž et al [ 36 , 47 ], lower heritability of longevity (0.041, 0.075) was found for Croatian Simmental cattle using this measurement value, whereas [ 34 ] and [ 48 ] reported higher values of heritability (0.19 and 0.18, respectively). Based on the review of [ 1 ], the heritability of longevity varied between 0.01–0.30 by using different models.…”

“…Longevity can be described in various ways and measures; it covers productivity of life when defined as the time period between first calving and culling [ 1 ]. Longevity is an important trait in the selection of dairy cattle, as it contributes to profitability.…”
