The corrosion of N80 steel in polymer flooding is studied, and the safe service life of N80 steel tubing is calculated. The results show that the temperature is the main factor affecting the corrosion of tubing during the process of polymer flooding, and the safe service life of N80 carbon steel tubing at 75°C is only 11.1 years. The polymer is connected by molecular chains to form a network structure and then adsorbed on the surface of the steel. As the polymer concentration increases, the space between polymer molecules becomes smaller; the exposed surface area decreases; and the corrosion rate of N80 steel decreases. Both temperature and Cl− ions destroy the adsorption capacity of the polymer on the carbon steel substrate. The negatively charged chloride ion repels the negatively charged polymer, leading to the resolution of the polymer and reduction of the corrosion inhibition of the polymer. High temperature destroys the polymer's intramolecular and intermolecular aggregation, and also wrecks the long molecular chain polymer structure, significantly inhibiting the corrosion inhibition effect of the polymer.

Recently, corrosion perforation has been frequently seen in surface pipelines in the oil and gas industry, resulting in operational and environmental challenges. Due to the complex characteristics and mechanisms of such corrosion, a new and pragmatic method has been designed to identify and evaluate the corrosion phenomenon via a hanging ring installed in a surface pipeline. In addition to respectively analyzing the ions of water samples with chemical titration, ion chromatography, and mass spectrometry, the micro-surface morphology of the corroded hanging rings was observed and evaluated by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and the surface composition of the corroded hanging rings was analyzed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The water ions of each selected position were found to mainly contain Ca2+, Ba2+, SO42−, and HCO3−, while the barium scale and calcium carbonate scale were formed in situ. In addition to the common corrosion induced by CO2, corrosion induced by both CO2 and H2S leads to extremely serious corrosion and scaling in surface pipelines. In addition, the injection dose of corrosion inhibitor was also evaluated.

External corrosion poses a significant threat to the integrity and lifespan of buried pipelines. Accurate prediction of corrosion rates is important for the safe and efficient transportation of oil and natural gas. However, limited data availability often impacts the performance of conventional predictive models. This study proposes a novel composite modeling approach integrating kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and extreme learning machine (ELM). The key innovation lies in using KPCA for reducing the dimensionality of complex input data combined with PSO for optimizing the parameters of the ELM network. The model was rigorously trained on 12 different datasets and comprehensively evaluated using metrics such as the coefficient of determination (R2), standard deviation (SD), mean relative error (MRE), and root mean square error (RMSE). The results show that KPCA effectively extracted four primary components, accounting for 91.33% of the data variability. The KPCA-PSO-ELM composite model outperformed independent models with a higher accuracy, achieving an R2 of 99.59% and an RMSE of only 0.0029%. The model comprehensively considered various indicators under the conditions of limited data. The model significantly improved the prediction accuracy and provides a guarantee for the safety of oil and gas transport.
