Collective transverse flow in heavy-ion collisions at incident energies E lab ≃ (1-160)A GeV is analyzed within the model of 3-fluid dynamics (3FD). Simulations are performed with purely hadronic equation of state (EoS). At the AGS energies the flow turns out to be sensitive to the stopping power of nuclear matter rather than only to the stiffness of the EoS. When the stopping power is fixed to reproduce other observables, the flow data favor more and more soft EoS with the incident energy rise, which can be associated with "a transition from hadronic to string matter" reported in the Hadron-String-Dynamics (HSD) model. Problems, which are met in simultaneous reproduction of directed and elliptic flows within the 3FD, suggest that the transverse flow is very sensitive to the character of the transverse-momentum nonequilibrium at the initial stage of collision. Arguments in favor of "early-stage" nature of the flow observable are put forward. This suggests that the flow (especially the directed one) is determined by early-stage evolution of the collision rather than freeze-out stage.

Transport-theoretical description of nuclear reactions

In this review we first outline the basics of transport theory and its recent generalization to offshell transport. We then present in some detail the main ingredients of any transport method using in particular the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) implementation of this theory as an example. We discuss the potentials used, the ground state initialization and the collision term, including the in-medium modifications of the latter. The central part of this review covers applications of GiBUU to a wide class of reactions, starting from pion-induced reactions over proton and antiproton reactions on nuclei to heavy-ion collisions (up to about 30 AGeV). A major part concerns also the description of photon-, electron-and neutrino-induced reactions (in the energy range from a few 100 MeV to a few 100 GeV). For this wide class of reactions GiBUU gives an excellent description with the same physics input and the same code being used. We argue that GiBUU is an indispensable tool for any investigation of nuclear reactions in which final-state interactions play a role. Studies of pion-nucleus interactions, nuclear fragmentation, heavy-ion reactions, hypernucleus formation, hadronization, color transparency, electronnucleus collisions and neutrino-nucleus interactions are all possible applications of GiBUU and are discussed in this article.

Quantum hadrodynamics (QHD) is a framework for describing the nuclear many-body problem as a relativistic system of baryons and mesons. Motivation is given for the utility of such an approach and for the importance of basing it on a local, Lorentz-invariant lagrangian density. Calculations of nuclear matter and finite nuclei in both renormalizable and nonrenormalizable, effective QHD models are discussed. Connections are made between the effective and renormalizable models, as well as between relativistic mean-field theory and more sophisticated treatments. Recent work in QHD involving nuclear structure, electroweak interactions in nuclei, relativistic transport theory, nuclear matter under extreme conditions, and the evaluation of loop diagrams is reviewed.
