Purpose It is still unclear how Asian universities incorporate the theory or practice of sustainable development (SD) in their research and education programmes. To address this gap, the purpose of this paper is to report on a study that has examined how universities in Asian countries handle and address matters related to SD. Design/methodology/approach The study used a bibliometric analysis and an online survey-method. The online survey data were analysed through descriptive analysis and one-sample student’s t-test. Findings The study indicates that there is considerable variation among the Asian countries regarding sustainability practices in higher education institutions (HEIs). The HEIs in far eastern countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand are perceived to demonstrate more sustainability practices. Research limitations/implications Even though a substantial number of participants participated in the survey, it did not cover all Asian countries. The online survey was carried out over a limited period of time, and not all HEIs in the field may have received information about the study. Practical implications Asia is the largest continent facing a number of sustainability challenges. In this context, the contribution of HEIs is very important. The findings of the current study may serve as a baseline for Asian HEIs to take more initiatives towards SD goals, as HEIs are responsible for the education and training of hundreds of thousands of students who will be occupying key positions in industry, government or education in the coming years. Originality/value The study contributes to the existing literature in two distinct ways. First, it was possible to develop a comprehensive instrument to measure sustainability practices in HEIs. Second, this study has filled the gap of the scarcity of studies regarding sustainability practices in HEIs in Asia.

Net zero energy building design methodologies include integrative approaches and numerical tools to provide optimal performance and cost-effective results. Team integration, characterized by knowledge transfer between disciplines, has yet to be quantified for the design processes of these buildings. This article proposes a specific methodology for designing net zero energy buildings, tested through a case study design process conducted in an academic setting at Universidad Centroamericana in El Salvador, with the participation of students and faculty members. Through a survey, interdisciplinary knowledge transfer between team members was measured. We found that, without additional instruction, team participants outperformed a control group without project involvement by 16.4% (P < 0.002, t-test) in terms of interdisciplinary knowledge. This result implies that designers acquire new knowledge from other disciplines by interacting and solving design problems, although such acquisition is not uniform between disciplines. Remarkably, results show that the disciplinary groups that acquired the most knowledge about each other are Mechanical Engineering students and Architecture students. These results help us understand how to improve the design process, limit boundaries for disciplinary interactions, and determine which specific knowledge gaps to target per discipline in engineering and architecture education.

Stakeholder Engagement Process in Water Saving Initiatives for Sustainable Tourist Destination in Samui Island, Thailand

This paper is based on the water-saving initiatives for sustainable tourist destinations launched by the government sector under a project called Save Water, Save Samui (SWSS) at Samui Island, a famous tourist destination in Thailand. For this project, a mixed-methodologies research approach was employed. This research aims to identify stakeholder engagement processes for water-saving initiatives. Quantitative research methods were conducted through a questionnaire-based survey, which provided supportive information from guests and hotels voluntarily involved in the SWSS project. Qualitative research methods were conducted through focus group discussions with hotel staff and in-depth interviews with representatives from hotel businesses, government officers, and locals. Findings showed that stakeholder engagement processes in the SWSS project appeared at three levels: information, response, and involvement. Lessons from the SWSS project addressed limiting aspects of the stakeholder engagement processes, including poor information dissemination, small numbers and few stakeholders involved, inconsistency across the project, and unclear incentive strategies for stakeholder engagement. To move forward, establishing a collaborative relationship among stakeholders is required to facilitate network extension, with the goal of an inclusive and collective action strategy to pursue water saving for tourist destinations in the long term.
