This study investigates the dynamic behavior of a recently developed counterbalance forklift truck. The final objective is creating virtual testing tools based on numerical multibody models to evaluate the dynamic stresses experienced by the forklift family of interest during a reference operating cycle, defined by the manufacturer’s testing protocols. This work aims at defining sufficiently accurate and easy-to-implement modelling approaches and validation procedures. It focuses on a specific test, namely the passage of a speed-bump-like obstacle at high velocity, which represents one of the most severe conditions within the reference cycle. Indeed, unlike most of the other wheeled vehicles, forklifts typically do not have advanced suspension systems and their dynamic response is significantly affected by ground irregularities. To this end, a preliminary model of the complete forklift, featuring rigid bodies and a simplified tire–ground contact model, is implemented with a commercial software. Experimental tests are conducted on the forklift to measure the vehicle vibrations when running on the obstacle, for model validation purposes. After model updating, the results provided by the numerical simulations match the experimental data satisfactorily. Hence, the modelling and validation strategies are proven viable and effective.

Learning game for improving forklift drivers’ safety awareness

Forklift drivers in in-house logistics are at a high risk of occupational injuries. This study piloted a video-based learning game for forklift drivers, designed to increase their safety awareness in their highly dynamic operating environment. The game consisted of video clips filmed from the driver's perspective. Each video clip was stopped and masked at a point where a safety-relevant item or hazard appeared. Two locations were marked on the screen, one with the hazard and the other with no hazard. The players had to choose the location with the hazard while the screen was masked and received feedback on their choice. Eighty-one professional forklift drivers played the game at their workplaces during the 3-4 month intervention. In addition, forklift registered hard shocks were recorded and compared to the game performance of 20 participants. Higher accuracy in the game correlated with a lower shock rate, suggesting that real-world forklift driving skills transferred to the game. However, accuracy improvement in the game did not decrease the vehicle registered hard shocks. During the intervention, 40% of the participants reported that they began to pay more attention to the hazards of their work environment. Overall, the results suggest that a gamified approach could be useful for demonstrating safety-relevant features at the workplace and supporting drivers' safety-related self-reflection.

This paper presents a novel Track-Before-Detect (TBD) Labeled Multi-Bernoulli (LMB) filter tailored for industrial mobile platform safety applications. At the core of the developed solution is two techniques for fusion of color and edge information in visual tracking. We derive an application specific separable likelihood function that captures the geometric shape of the human targets wearing safety vests. We use a novel geometric shape likelihood along with a color likelihood to devise two Bayesian updates steps which fuse shape and color related information. One approach is sequential and the other is based on weighted Kullback–Leibler average (KLA). Experimental results show that the KLA based fusion variant of the proposed algorithm outperforms both the sequential update based variant and a state-of-art method in terms of the performance metrics commonly used in computer vision literature.
