Analysis of Farmland Abandonment at Parcel Level: A Case Study in the Mountainous Area of China

Abstract: Abstract:Chongqing municipality, the main study area of this paper, is a mountainous city in Southwest China, where massive rural populations migrated to cities and towns in recent years. This study extracted abandoned farmland figure spots from farmland distribution maps of 2002 and 2011 on a 1:10,000 scale. Further, this research analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of farmland abandonment and its influencing factors at the parcel level from 2002 to 2011. The main influencing factors of farmland… Show more

“…Cropland abandonment, an extreme manifestation of land marginalization [1], is an ongoing trend in both developed and developing countries worldwide [2], attracting great attention at a global level [2][3][4][5]. Due to rapid economic growth, urbanization and industrialization have been vigorously promoted in recent years, accelerating the transfer of the large rural labor force to urban areas [6].…”

“…In sum, seasonal farmland abandonment is a complex, multi-dimensional process where socioeconomic and environmental forces and the spatial interaction of farm abandonment are interlinked. The influence of farming facilities, macro location, and spatial dependence on farm abandonment has not been discovered by previous studies on Chinese farm abandonment at the parcel and household levels; thus, this study updates and enriches our knowledge [24,27].…”

“…With cultivated land abandonment in China, scholars have studied the pattern and driving factors from the micro-level of peasant households, parcels, and villages, mainly with the aim to understand perennial abandonment [8,24,25,27,42]. However, our understanding of seasonal abandonment is still insufficient.…”

“…The amount of per capita farmland has become an important referencing index, directly reflecting the overall pattern of the "man-land relationship" at local and smallholder scale, and is also an important influencing factor of the spatial resilience of the GPS [1,2]. Under the background of rural-urban migration, the transition of the recessive morphology of farmland use (including the circulation proportion, the non-agricultural proportion, the non-grain proportion) has gradually been highlighted [104]. In addition, the relationships between farmland transition and other land use patterns (such as the relationship between forest transition and farmland transition) are key factors for the transformation of the system (Figure 7).…”
