<p>Land suitability assessment is essential for the efficient use of diminishing fertile agricultural land. Assessment parameters include soil texture, pH, the sum of basic cations, base saturation, cation exchange capacity, organic carbon, soil depth, slope, and mean annual temperature and precipitation data. Results showed that 76.28% and 23.26% of the total area were optimally and moderately suitable for coffee growth, respectively; 9.6% and 90% were optimally and moderately suitable for cocoa growth, respectively; 1.98%, 78.74%, and 19.26% were optimally, moderately, and marginally suitable for clove growth, respectively; and 6.68%, 86.89%, and 6.41% was optimally, moderately, and marginally suitable for pepper growth, respectively. The final land suitability index (LSI) was strongly influenced by the threshold values used by the researcher and the quality of the land indicator itself. Plant threshold values differed due to variations in plant recruitment. The main limiting factors were mean annual temperature <26°C, acidic soil pH, and low CEC. This study showed that the fuzzy method is ideal for converting the numerical data of various magnitudes into membership function values and representing land suitability. The principal component analysis is an effective method to determine the weights of multiple factors in a systematic and objective manner. The linearity test found a correlation between LSI and production with f = 0.00, indicating that the applied model can predict agricultural production and is applicable to other agricultural land management.</p>

This study aimed to assess the prospects for cocoa rehabilitation using side-grafting techniques to increase the production and income of farmers in the Aere Sub-district, East Kolaka District. The research was undertaken from March to April 2019 in Three villages, namely Aere, Tinete, and Rubia villages, selected purposively as study locations as they had large cocoa farming sizes and had applied side-grafting. Seventy-one respondents were selected from the population of 248 farmers. Data analysis employed an R/C ratio and descriptive statistics. Study results showed that cocoa rehabilitation prospects using a side-grafting technique in the study area were highly prospective. Cocoa farming was financially feasible, with the average income per cocoa farmer being IDR7,105,613 per year or IDR4,588,482 per ha per year. The R/C ratio of 2.0 meant that rehabilitation with side-grafting techniques to increase the production and income of cocoa farmers was financially feasible. Qualitative analysis also showed that the rehabilitation was feasible from technical, socio-cultural, and environmental aspects. The government was also committed to developing cocoa farming through the adoption of some policies and programs, including budget support

Cocoa is a predominant crop estate commodity produced in Southeast Sulawesi. The main constrain increasing cocoa productivity regarding the non-technical factor is developing cocoa community. The government has launched Cocoa Community Institution (LEM) to overcome lack of community development in a cocoa farming system. This study aims to identify institutions related to the community development based on cocoa commodity and to analyze the performance of LEM. This study was conducted in two Sub-Districts (Lambuya and Besulutu) of Konawe district in Southeast Sulawesi province. Participatory method was implemented to get the primary data through an open interview based on the performance indicators of LEM Sejahtera. The number of respondents was 30 farmers chosen by simple random sampling. The Cocoa Community Institution was the main purpose of this study focusing on its performance of LEM Sejahtera in enhancing smallholders’ income. The results of this study indicated that LEM Sejahtera in Besulutu had contributed significantly to supply input and lend money to help poor resource farmers based on the community development program.
