Analysis of experimental results with an active pre-chamber ultra-lean burn SI engine

Abstract: To ensure that private cars can continue to be used in the future, they must become significantly more efficient and at the same time emit considerably less pollutants. In addition to pure electric drives, further optimized gasoline engines in hybrid powertrain configurations still offer major potentials in this respect. A major step toward increasing efficiency can be achieved by extremely lean burn combustion. If, in addition to low fuel consumption, this operation should also simultaneously reduce NOx raw e… Show more

“…This has been confirmed in more recent studies. 8,9 However, experiments also reveal that the design of the pre-chamber is critical: Sadanandan et al 10 show that, in a divided chamber academic configuration, the size of the pre-chamber orifices determines the injection speed and temperature of the jets. During TJI, two mechanisms compete: (1) mixing is necessary to create zones where the fresh gases of the main chamber and the hot gases of the jet are mixed so that chemical reactions are accelerated but (2) this mixing also decreases temperature so that chemical reactions are slowed down.…”

“…By supplying a large quantity of turbulent hot gas to the combustion chamber, the prechamber ignites even a highly diluted mixture. 9,10 In marine applications, the propeller torque and engine load oscillate in time. The time-varying wake distribution, time-varying thrust deduction fraction, and the ship motions are primarily responsible for the propeller load variation.…”
