Analysis of dispersion and absorption characteristics of shear waves in sinusoidally corrugated elastic medium with void pores

Abstract: This theoretical work reports the dispersion and absorption characteristics of horizontally polarized shear wave (SH-wave) in a corrugated medium with void pores sandwiched between two dissimilar half-spaces. The dispersion and absorption equations have been derived in a closed form using the method of separation of variables. It has been established that there are two different kinds of wavefronts propagating in the proposed media. One of the wavefronts depends on the modulus of rigidity of elastic matrix of … Show more

“…Thus, uneven interfacial surfaces between distinct layers must be taken into account to replicate earth's interior in a mathematical formulation of a problem concerned with seismic waves [28,29] and these uneven interfaces can be rectangular, parabolic or corrugated in nature. In one such study, Pandit et al [30] discussed SH wave propagation in a sinusoidal corrugated elastic layer with void pores which is sandwiched between two dissimilar half spaces. They presented the impacts of various parameters such as corrugated boundary surfaces and sandiness parameter on the dispersion of SH waves.…”

“…Various techniques are currently being used, and attenuation of seismic waves is a non-destructive technique [ 14 ] that can be used to investigate the mechanical properties of reservoir rocks as well as other substances [ 15 ]. Biwa [ 14 ] has studied the attenuation of waves in fibre-reinforced viscoelastic composites and found that when the wavelength is larger than the fibre radius, the attenuation coefficient is small compared with the viscoelastic matrix.…”

“…Moreover, Pandit et al . [ 15 ] have characterized the wave attenuation in an elastic medium with voids and concluded that in elastic mediums with voids more than one wavefront might exist. Seismic waves can be used to investigate the mechanical properties of the reservoir rock as well as to identify the optimal drilling locations [ 16 , 17 ].…”
