Analysis of differentially expressed genes in abiotic stress response and their role in signal transduction pathways

Abstract: The study of abiotic stress response of plants is important because they have to cope with environmental changes to survive. The plant genomes have evolved to meet environmental challenges. Salt, temperature, and drought are the main abiotic stresses. The tolerance and response to stress vary differently in plants. The idea was to analyze the genes showing differential expression under abiotic stresses. There are many pathways connecting the perception of external stimuli to cellular responses. In plants, thes… Show more

“…This distinctiveness and combination of intrinsic changes define the capacity of the hybrid genotype to sustain under unfavorable environmental conditions which may involve many changes at the physiological and biochemical levels. In response to cold, many genes may be regulated differentially and their gene products function in providing stress tolerance to plants (Sanchita et al 2013). Therefore, in this way, the traditional methods were being complemented by molecular techniques for enabling and supporting breeding programs.…”

“…In our study, WRKY was found to be down-regulated and the WRKY coding gene showed high expression in the hybrid as compared to O. kilimandscharicum and O. basilicum. Another transcription factor microsporespecific (MPS) promoter has also shown a high expression in the hybrid for its response against cold stress (Sanchita et al 2013). Therefore, WRKY and MPS genes responded against cold stress.…”

“…When encountered with extra-cellular stimuli or to prevent HM entrance from susceptible sites into the protoplast, the cell walls could activate a variety of specific stress-responsive signaling proteins, such as MAPKs and calcium-binding related proteins. It was reported that MAPKs were important mediators in signal transmission, connecting the perception of external stimuli to cellular responses (Sanchita Dhawan and Sharma, 2014 ). The calmodulin (CaM) system could regulate HM ion transport, gene expression, and stress tolerance (DalCorso et al, 2010 ).…”

“…The survival of plants under stress is reliant on their ability to perceive and convey the environmental stimulus in the form of signals and finally adjust themselves accordingly through biochemical or developmental modifications to ensure continued existence (Hasegawa et al, 2000; Dhawan and Sharma, 2014). The signaling cascades and pathways are generally very integrative in nature and are primarily regulated by hormones (Atkinson and Urwin, 2012; Lima-Silva et al, 2012).…”
