Analysis of contact pressure in a 3D model of dual-mobility hip joint prosthesis under a gait cycle

Abstract: Hip joint prostheses are used to replace hip joint function in the human body. The latest dual-mobility hip joint prosthesis has an additional component of an outer liner that acts as a cover for the liner component. Research on the contact pressure generated on the latest model of a dual-mobility hip joint prosthesis under a gait cycle has never been done before. The model is made of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) on the inner liner and 316L stainless steel (SS 316L) on the outer liner and a… Show more

“…There are three common materials available that were previously widely used in the bearings of total hip prostheses; metals [ 46 ], ceramics [ 47 ], and polymers [ 48 ]. These materials would generally be fabricated with conventional machining [ 49 ].…”

“…This was reflected in the dimensions of the prepared cavities in the MCT assessment, which showed no dimensional discrepancies upon evaluating the restoration volume for all groups tested. Moreover, each pulp-capping material's setting time was estimated after reviewing previous reports and the manufacturer's recommendations (6). Then, the pulp-capping agents were covered with a cotton pellet to ensure that the materials were appropriately set by supplying optimal hydration for the setting reaction before the final restoration was applied.…”

“…Generally, the patterns of hip angle during normal walking are similar, and only the amplitude and the frequency are slightly different in each person [31]. The walking gait cycle involves two main phases: the stance phase (60% of the gait cycle) and the swing phase (40% of the gait cycle) [32]. The leg posture of each event during a gait cycle is shown in Figure 2.…”
