Analysis of Antioxidant Constituents from Ilex rotunda and Evaluation of Their Blood–Brain Barrier Permeability

Abstract: Ilex rotunda Thunb., has been used to treat common cold, tonsillitis, and eczema. It is also a source of antioxidants. However, information regarding its antioxidative phytochemical composition is still incomplete and limited. In this present study, we initially determined DPPH radical scavenging activity of the extracts of I. rotunda fruits, twigs, and leaves. Among them, the twig extract exhibited a potential of antioxidant capacity. Based on antioxidant effect guided experiments, extraction condition using … Show more

“…Due to the separation of tiny molecules between the bloodstream and brain tissues, this distribution profiling evaluated the "BBB (blood-brain barrier) permeability," which is relevant for protecting the human "central nervous system." 43 The maximum "BBB permeability" was found for the linalool (0.598 log BB) and the minimum for nimbin (−1.129 log BB). The medications are metabolized and undergo a structural change into new molecules due to the presence of Cytochrome P450 enzymes (found in the human liver and intestine).…”

“…The 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid diammonium salt) (ABTS; Sigma-Aldrich, Co., St. Louis, MO, USA) free radical scavenging activity was evaluated using a previously reported method [ 24 ]. Potassium persulfate (2.45 mM) was added to an ABTS (7 mM) solution and reacted at 4 °C for 16 h in the shade.…”
