Analysis of 139 spinal cord injuries due to accidents in water sports

Abstract: Abstract. Between 1967 and 1978, a total of 2587 patients received primary treatment in the Spinal Cord Injury Centre at the University of Heidelberg. In 212 cases the paralysis was caused by sports or diving accidents. Injuries resulting from accidents in water sports totalled 139, 13 1 (61'7 per cent) of which could be classified as actual diving accidents. These 13 1 cases consisted of 129 tetraplegias and only 2 paraplegias. In 5 cases, the tetraplegia resulted from high diving and in 3 cases from scuba-di… Show more

“…1 Diving mishaps are also among the leading causes of SCI in other countries. In decreasing order, diving mishaps have accounted for 23.5% of SCI in Novosibirsk, Russia, 2 14% in Brisbane, Australia, 3 11.9% in Toronto, Canada, 4 10.5% in Perth, Australia, 5 7% in Romania, 6 6% in Denmark, 7 5.1% in Heidelberg, Germany, 8 3.8% in the Rhone-Alpes region of France, 9 2.5% in Portugal, 10 but only 1.3% in Japan. 11,12 Although the percentage of total SCI was not reported, diving mishaps cause 19.8% of all cervical SCI in Poland.…”

“…Although injuries to the spinal cord as a result of diving into shallow water are relatively common (Steinbruck and Paeslack, 1980), other injuries to the cord due to water sports are rare. Girard (1980) has described 13 cases of paraplegia due to decompression in scuba divers, but we know of no previously described spinal cord lesions due to windsurfing, although maxillo-facial (Re et al, 1984) and eye damage (Volker-Dieben et al, 1980) have been reported.…”

“…Water sports are also responsible for spinal cord injuries (Scher, 1978;Green et al, 1980;Steinbreuck and Paeslack, 1980;Kiewerski, 1980;Melamed and Ohry, 1980). Most of the patients who were injured during these activities had cervical spine trauma.…”
