Spinal cord injuries resulting from sport. The Israeli experience

Abstract: Abstract. A brief account is given of patients who sustained a spinal cord injury while playing or practising sports or during leisure time physical activities. We have not attempted to analyse the various mechanisms of injury, but to record the striking fact that 13 of the 19 patients are tetraplegics. These devastating results could be prevented by adequate precautions and attention.

“…This is similar to the frequency in other countries (Burke, 1977;Frankel et at., 1969;Girard et at., 1980;Griffiths, 1980;Kurtzke, 1975;Ohry and Rozin, 1982;Steinbriick and Paeslack, 1980;Stover and Fine, 1987), and as in most other series diving into shallow water was the commonest cause. The danger of severe injuries associated with the use of trampoline has previously been stressed (Ellis et at., 1960;Krawitz, 1978;Stein briick and Paeslack, 1978), and in Denmark this knowledge resulted in 1981 in the ban on usage of trampolines in schools.…”

“…In Israel, air sport accidents are the main cause of SCI, probably because of intensive and extensive military activities in the region. 8 In Australia 10 and South Africa, 9 most of the spinal cord injuries result from the popular sports of the two countries, namely, Australian football and rugby. In Beijing, water sports were the most common cause of SR-related SCIs, followed by gymnastics and ball games.…”

“…These injuries predominately occur in young adults, [1][2][3][4] and contribute to a high incidence of long-term disability and high morbidity. [5][6][7][8][9][10] They also impose a heavy economic burden on the society. 5,11 An understanding of the pattern of SR-related SCIs is necessary to identify the risk groups in terms of age, gender, type of sports and recreation, and mechanism of injury to improve prevention.…”
