A Michelson interferometer, on loan from EFDA-JET (Culham, United Kingdom) has recently been commissioned on the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST, ASIPP, Hefei, China). Following a successful in-situ absolute calibration the instrument is able to measure the electron cyclotron emission (ECE) spectrum, from 80 GHz to 350 GHz in extraordinary mode (X-mode) polarization, with high accuracy. This allows the independent determination of the electron temperature profile from observation of the second harmonic ECE and the possible identification of non-Maxwellian features by comparing higher harmonic emission with numerical simulations. The in-situ calibration results are presented together with the initial measured temperature profiles. These measurements are then discussed and compared with other independent temperature profile measurements. This paper also describes the main hardware features of the diagnostic and the associated commissioning test results.

The study of the edge plasma has significant effect for the performance improvement of magnetic confinement. However, the Thomson scattering system, which has been used to provide electron temperature and electron density on EAST, do not meet the requirements for the edge plasma measurements in measurement region, spatial and spectral resolution. Herein, a TV Thomson scattering diagnostic system has been constructed for the measurements of edge electron temperature and electron density profiles on EAST. A new laser system, optical collection system and data acquisition system are designed to enable the TV Thomson system operate at the measurement region of 0.65–1.1 ρ (“ρ” is the unitary radius in flux coordinate) with spectral resolution of 5 nm and spatial resolution as low as 2 mm. And the theoretical analysis proves that the system has the measurability at electron temperature of 20–1000 eV and density beyond 0.2 × 1019 m-3, which fulfills research of the pedestal microstructure on EAST. The establishment of the edge TV Thomson system can create the conditions for the edge physical study on EAST.

We report the measurement of total molybdenum ion density for L-mode and H-mode plasmas on EAST using spectral lines observation and calculation based on an impurity transport code. A flat-filed extreme ultraviolet spectrometer with some spatial resolution is used to obtain the radial profiles of molybdenum spectral line emissions. The absolute calibration for the extreme ultraviolet spectrometer is finished by comparing the calculated bremsstrahlung intensity with the readings of CCD detector. Molybdenum ion transport study is performed using the radial ion density profiles and one-dimensional impurity transport code STRAHL. The total molybdenum density profiles are determined from the transport analysis. The molybdenum density during L-mode and H-mode phases are obtained, which are about 3 and 4 orders of magnitude smaller than the electron density, respectively. An inward pinch is found during the H-mode phase that leads to the peaked profile of molybdenum density.
