A series of Mn 2+ -doped CsPbCl 3 nanocrystals (NCs) was synthesized using reaction temperature and precursor concentration to tune Mn 2+ concentrations up to 14%, and then studied using variable-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. All doped NCs show Mn 2+ 4 T 1g → 6 A 1g d−d luminescence within the optical gap coexisting with excitonic luminescence at the NC absorption edge. Room-temperature Mn 2+ PL quantum yields increase with increased doping, reaching ∼60% at ∼3 ± 1% Mn 2+ before decreasing at higher concentrations. The low-doping regime is characterized by singleexponential PL decay with a concentration-independent lifetime of 1.8 ms, reflecting efficient luminescence of isolated Mn 2+ . At elevated doping, the decay is shorter, multiexponential, and concentration-dependent, reflecting the introduction of Mn 2+ −Mn 2+ dimers and energy migration to traps. A large, anomalous decrease in Mn 2+ PL intensity is observed with decreasing temperature, stemming from the strongly temperature-dependent exciton lifetime and slow exciton-to-Mn 2+ energy transfer, which combine to give a strongly temperature-dependent branching ratio for Mn 2+ sensitization.

We report multilayer nanocrystal quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) fabricated by spin-coating a monolayer of colloidal CdSe/CdS nanocrystals on top of thermally polymerized solvent-resistant hole-transport layers (HTLs). We obtain high-quality QD layers of controlled thickness (down to submonolayer) simply by spin-coating QD solutions directly onto the HTL. The resulting QD-LEDs exhibit narrow ( approximately 30 nm, fwhm) electroluminescence from the QDs with virtually no emission from the organic matrix at any voltage. Using multiple spin-on HTLs improves the external quantum efficiency of the QD-LEDs to approximately 0.8% at a brightness of 100 cd/m(2) (with a maximum brightness over 1,000 cd/m(2)). We conclude that QD-LEDs could be made more efficient by further optimization of the organic semiconductors.

A series of Cu doped Zn–In–S quantum dots (Cu:Zn–In–S d-dots) were synthesized via a one-pot noninjection synthetic approach by heating up a mixture of corresponding metal acetate salts and sulfur powder together with dodecanethiol in oleylamine media. After overcoating the ZnS shell around the Cu:Zn–In–S d-dot cores directly in the crude reaction solution, the resulting Cu:Zn–In–S/ZnS d-dots show composition-tunable photoluminescence (PL) emission over the entire visible spectral window and extending to the near-infrared spectral window (from 450 to 810 nm), with the highest PL quantum yield (QY) up to 85%. Importantly, the initial high PL QY of the obtained Cu:Zn–In–S/ZnS d-dots in organic media can be preserved when transferred into aqueous media via ligand exchange. Furthermore, electroluminescent devices with good performance (with a maximum luminance of 220 cd m–2, low turn-on voltages of 3.6 V) have been fabricated with the use of these Cd-free low toxicity yellow-emission Cu:Zn–In–S/ZnS d-dots as an active layer in these QD-based light-emitting diodes.

A new type of environmentally friendly phosphor based on carbon nanodots (CDs) has been developed through the dispersion of CDs by integrating the CDs with starch particles. The starch particles contain large numbers of hydroxyl groups around the surfaces, which can effectively absorb the CDs, whose surfaces are functionalized by lots of carboxyl and amide groups, through hydrogen bonding. Effective dispersion of CDs on the surfaces of starch particles can suppress the non-radiative decay processes and photoluminescence (PL) quenching induced by aggregation of CDs. The starch matrix neither competes for absorbing excitation light nor absorbs the emissions of CDs, which leads to efficient PL emitting. As a result, the starch/CD phosphors with a quantum yield of ∼50% were obtained. The starch/CD phosphors show great potential in phosphor-based light emitting diodes, temperature sensors, and patterning.

The emergence of fiber-shaped supercapacitors (FSSs) has led to a revolution in portable and wearable electronic devices. However, obtaining high energy density FSSs for practical applications is still a key challenge. This article exhibits a facile and effective approach to directly grow well-aligned three-dimensional vanadium nitride (VN) nanowire arrays (NWAs) on carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber with an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 715 mF/cm in a three-electrode system. Benefiting from their intriguing structural features, we successfully fabricated a prototype asymmetric coaxial FSS (ACFSS) with a maximum operating voltage of 1.8 V. From core to shell, this ACFSS consists of a CNT fiber core coated with VN@C NWAs as the negative electrode, NaSO poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the solid electrolyte, and MnO/conducting polymer/CNT sheets as the positive electrode. The novel coaxial architecture not only fully enables utilization of the effective surface area and decreases the contact resistance between the two electrodes but also, more importantly, provides a short pathway for the ultrafast transport of axial electrons and ions. The electrochemical results show that the optimized ACFSS exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance of 213.5 mF/cm and an exceptional energy density of 96.07 μWh/cm, the highest areal capacitance and areal energy density yet reported in FSSs. Furthermore, the device possesses excellent flexibility in that its capacitance retention reaches 96.8% after bending 5000 times, which further allows it to be woven into flexible electronic clothes with conventional weaving techniques. Therefore, the asymmetric coaxial architectural design allows new opportunities to fabricate high-performance flexible FSSs for future portable and wearable electronic devices.

The luminescence properties of inorganic perovskite CsPbBr nanocrystals (NCs) with emissions of 492 and 517 nm under thermal annealing treatment were studied by temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The CsPbBr NCs were annealed in vacuum at various temperatures. It was found that the NCs exhibited significant thermal degradation of PL at thermal annealing temperatures above 320 K. The transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and PL spectroscopy demonstrated that the size of NCs almost kept constant at thermal annealing temperatures below 360 K while it significantly enlarged at higher thermal temperatures above 380 K. The PL intensities, peak energies and linewidths of the annealed NCs, as a function of temperature, are discussed in detail. The PL degradation of the NCs was related to the formation of nonradiative recombination centers due to the loss of ligands and growth of NCs under thermal annealing.
