Multilevel inverters (MLIs) with switched-capacitor (SC) units have been a widely rehearsed research topic in power electronics since the last decade. Inductorless/transformerless operation with voltage-boosting feature and inherent capacitor self-voltage balancing performance with a reduced electromagnetic interference make the SC-MLI an attractive converter over the other available counterparts for various applications. There have been many developed SC-MLI structures recently put forward, where different basic switching techniques are used to generate multiple (discrete) output voltage levels. In general, the priority of the topological development is motivated by the number of output voltage levels, overall voltage gain, and full dc-link voltage utilization, while reducing the component counts and stress on devices for better efficiency and power density. To facilitate the direction of future research in SC-MLIs, this article presents a comprehensive review, critical analysis, and categorization of the existing topologies. Common fundamental units are generalized and summarized with their merits and demerits. Ultimately, major challenges and research directions are outlined leading to the future technology roadmap for more practical applications.

An efficient and cost-effective power converter is a pre-requisite for the modern power applications. With the evolvement of matured medium power self-commutated switching devices, multilevel inverters (MLIs) are emerged as a promising solution for high-power medium-voltage applications. Though, MLIs are performing a promising role in industrial applications, their high device count, size, cost and control complexity have restricted their market penetration. To address the disadvantages of MLIs, researchers are continuously contributing to new generation topologies under the name of reduced switch count (RSC) MLIs. From the past decade, numerous RSC-MLIs topologies have been reported for various applications. The conventional multilevel inverter necessitates more active switching devices and high dc-link voltages. To minimalize the employment of switching devices and dc-link voltages, a novel topology has been proposed. In this paper, a novel minimum switch multilevel inverter is established using six switches and two dc-link voltages in the proportion of 1 : 2. In addition, the proposed topology is proficient in making seven-level voltages by appropriate gate signals. The PWM signals were produced using several inverted sine carriers and a single trapezoidal reference. When compared to other existing inverters, this configuration needs fewer components, as well as fewer gate drives. Furthermore, this module can generate a negative level without the use of a supplementary circuit such as an H-Bridge. As a result, overall cost and complexity are greatly reduced. The proposed minimum switch multilevel inverter operation is validated through simulations followed by experimental results of a prototype.
