A reconfigurable gm-boosted, image-rejected downconversion mixer is presented in this paper using the SiGe 8 HP technology. The proposed mixer operates within 0.9–13.5 GHz that is suitable for software-defined radio applications. The conversion mixer comprises of resistive biased radio frequency (RF) section, double balanced Gilbert cell mixer core sections divided as per I and Q stages for image-rejection purpose, inductively peaked gm-boosting section and tunable filter section, respectively. In comparison to previous works in the scientific literature, the design shows enhanced conversion gain (CG), noise figure (NF), and image-rejection ratio (IRR). For the entire band of operation, the mixer attains a good return loss |S11| of <−10 dB. Additionally, the design accomplishes an excellent CG of 22 dB, NF of 2.5 dB, and an image-rejection ratio of 30.2 dB at maximum frequency. Finally, a third-order intercept point (IP3) of −3.28 dBm and 1 dB compression point (CP1) of −13 dBm, respectively, shows moderate linearity performance.

Summary In this paper, a design of reconfigurable frequency mixer is adapted with gallium nitride high‐electron‐mobility transistor (GaN HEMT) architecture under variable gain, different intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidth, and active/passive configuration for multidisciplinary applications supported by wireless local area network (WLAN) framework. The low band (LB) and high band (HB) are reconfigured by shunting the power between the switching and transconductance at the IF stage of the transistor. The transistor switching mode (active and passive) and logic levels are fixed at the input stage, and the input radio frequency (RF) signal is steering between the gate and drain terminals of transistors. The transistor gain is controlled by adjusting transconductance at the input RF stage and the current‐steering in transimpedance stage at the output. The simulation results show that the proposed circuit provides variable gain of 23/25 and 30/32 dB and noise figure of 14.5/12.5 at the LB and HB reconfigurable scenarios. Hence, it is suitable for transceiver optimistic functions with converge large bandwidth through shunting stages of reconfigurable frequency mixer and transconductance.

A Quadrature Single Side-Band Mixer with Passive Negative Resistance in Software-Defined Frequency Synthesizer

Software-defined radio (SDR) is a good solution for complying with the existing and incoming protocols for emerging wireless sensor networks (WSN) and internet of things (IoT) applications. The frequency synthesizer in a SDR tranceiver usually consists of a phase locked loop (PLL) and a post synthesizer. The PLL is the narrow band signal source and the post synthesizer generates wideband outputs by mixing and dividing. Compared with a frequency synthesizer utilizing the wideband PLL, this synthesizer features relatively constant loop parameters and mitigates the requirement for the oscillator. In this paper, a quadrature single side-band (QSSB) mixer with the proposed passive negative resistance (PNR) for frequency mixing in a post synthesizer is presented. The PNR is achieved by biasing the Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFET) of the cross-coupled pair at the deep-triode region periodically and incorporates an inductor and a cap-array as the mixer load. Compared with the traditional single side-band mixers utilizing Inductor-Capacitor (LC) resonant loads or quality factor enhanced (Q-enhanced) LC resonant loads, which suffer from a selectivity versus working range trade-off, the mixer employing the proposed loading structure provides not only a wide operating range, but also a superior image side-band rejection ratio (ISRR). Moreover, the oscillating risk in conventional mixers adopting Q-enhanced LC resonant loads is eliminated. A wideband frequency synthesizer employing the proposed mixer was implemented in a TSMC 0.18 µm CMOS process and the mixer performed ISRR of 40–57 dB and 30–57 dB across 2.5–3 GHz and 2.3–3.2 GHz, respectively. The power consumption of the QSSB mixer, including buffer, is 18 mA from a 1.8 V supply and the active area is 0.445 mm2. The measurement results provide validation that the proposed QSSB mixer is suitable for wideband software-defined frequency synthesizers and other frequency generating systems.
