Show more

“…At pH 10.6 the absorption maximum has moved to 436 rag, and at pH 1.4 to 410 mg. This characteristic sepia pigment is probably to be identified with the yellow brown granules found by Cochrane (1936-37) and by Mainx (1938) in sepia eyes and included by both authors in the red component.…”

“…Schultz, 1935; Laki, 1935,36). Two groups of pigments appear to be present in the wild-type eye, designated as the red and the brown components (Mainx, 1938). The mutant scarlet, vermilion, and cinnabar eyes apparently contain only members of the red component, brown eyes only the brown component (Wright, 1932;Mainx, 1938).…”

“…Thirdly, if the alleles are divided into two groups according to which sex has the darker eyes, we find those with the male darker are: coral, wine, coloured, blood and apricot, while those with the female darker are eosin, cherry and white. In connection with a system of grouping Mainx (1938) noted that compounds such as coral/wine and blood/wine are intermediate in phenotype while those such as eosin/blood and apricot/white more nearly resemble the darker homozygote. It is also noteworthy that the first group, with the exception of wine, have relatively more red than brown pigment, while the second group, with the exception of eosin, have relatively more brown than red pigment.…”
