The theory of self-determination is one of the models explaining human motivation. The style of behavioral regulation is one of the key concepts of this theory, and the Behavioral Regulation in Sport Questionnaire (BRSQ) is the most widely used tool for measuring this in the context of sport. The goal of this research was to draw up a reduced adaptation of the Spanish version of the BRSQ, to allow faster application, an important factor considering the characteristics of the sporting context. The study involved a sample of 426 young Spanish sportspeople, of both sexes, who took part in various individual and collective sports. We applied the Spanish version of the BRSQ to the participants. This uses 24 items to measure six styles of behavioral regulation ordered according to the degree of self-determination: amotivation, external/extrinsic regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, integrated regulation, and intrinsic motivation/regulation. A reduced version containing 12 items was obtained after a factorial analysis that enabled the selection of the items with higher factorial loads. Next, the model was submitted to another, confirmatory factorial analysis to contrast this adjustment. The indices obtained permitted us to conclude that the reduced version reproduces the structure of the original version, producing satisfactory reliability indices. In summary, the 12-item version of the BRSQ developed is a valid and reliable measurement of the styles of behavioral regulation in the context of sport, and it may save considerable time when applied in the future.

This study is framed on the Information Theory as a constructive criterion to generate probabilistic distributions –through the elaboration of Bayesian Networks- and to reduce the uncertainty in the occurrence and relationship between two key psychological variables associated with the sports’ performance: Self-Determined Motivation and Competitive Anxiety. We analyzed 674 universitary students/athletes who competed in the 2017 Universitary Games (Universiade) in México, from 44 universities, with an average age of 21 years old (SD = 2.07), and with a sportive experience of 8.61 years of average (SD = 5.15). Methods: Regarding the data analysis, first of all a CHAID algorithm was carried out for to know the independence links among variables, and then two Bayesian networks (BN) were elaborated. The validation of the BN revealed AUC values ranging from 0.5 to 0.92. Subsequently, various instantations were carried out with hypothetical values applied to the “bottom” variables. Results showed two probability trees that have Extrinisic Motivation and Amotivation at the top, while the anxiety/activation due to the worry for performance was at the bottom of probabilities. The instantiations carried out support the existence of these probabilistic relationships, demonstrating the little influence on the competition anxiety generated by the intrinsic motivation. In conclusion, the reduction of the uncertainty made up by the restricted BN may aloe to re-introduce Information Theory principles in psychosocial studies, allowing authors to obtain useful probabilities values upon target psychological variables related with sportive performance.

ResumenEl judo de alto rendimiento se encuentra en continua evolución, explorándose nuevas formas de enseñanza y entrenamiento, que faciliten conducir al judoca hacia el éxito. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue analizar las relaciones que se establecen entre los diferentes tipos de motivación autodeterminada, necesidades psicológicas básicas, ansiedad cognitiva, ansiedad somática y autoconfianza en judocas competidores. Se analizó una muestra de 124 judocas competidores, 36 mujeres y 88 hombres pertenecientes a 16 clubes de toda España, cuyas categorías iban desde infantil hasta senior, con edades comprendidas entre los 12 y los 37 años. Para llevar a cabo dicho estudio, se pasaron los cuestionarios de Behavioral Regulation in Sport Questionnaire, para medir el nivel de motivación autodeterminada; el Psychological Need Satisfaction in Exercise Scale, para medir la satisfacción de las necesidades psicológicas básicas y el Revised Competitive State Anxiety Inventory, para medir el estado de ansiedad. Los resultados mostraron que la motivación intrínseca, correlacionó de forma positiva y significativa con la necesidad psicológica básica de competencia además de la autoconfianza en su dimensión intensidad. Por otro lado, la desmotivación, la regulación externa y la ansiedad somática en su dimensión intensidad, correlacionaron negativa y significativamente con la motivación intrínseca. Por consiguiente, los entrenadores tendrían que satisfacer las necesidades psicológicas básicas de los judocas, con el fin de provocar un aumento de las formas de motivación más autodeterminadas, pudiendo originar ello una mejora de la autoconfianza y una reducción de los niveles del estado de ansiedad.
