“…According to our results, during this period, 22 per cent CABG patients were women. This is consistent with other studies (Palma-Ruiz et al, 2003), as are older age and greater severity observed as higher female Charlson Indices. If we limit our analysis to 2,909 patients who died in hospital after surgery then these characteristics remain unchanged in women.…”

“…In-hospital mortality after coronary artery bypass graft varies depending on information sources. The minimum data set (MSBD) reported a 7.7 per cent mortality rate in 1998 (Palma-Ruiz et al, 2003), whereas the Sociedad Española de Cirugía Cardiovascular (Spanish Society of Cardiovascular Surgery) reported 6.4 per cent (Igual and Segura, 2000). Moreover, other authors show in-hospital mortality rates varying between hospitals (Ribera et al, 2006;Rodríguez-Pérez et al, 2000), even after adjusting clinical or therapeutic factors that might explain these inequalities.…”

“…At the same time, one of the biggest criticisms of this voluntary registry may be related to estimated values unreachable for other populations [ 6 ]. It is known that the results of mandatory registries, which include all operated patients, can have high deviation [ 7 ]. In underdeveloped or developing countries, the evaluation provided by these tools can be impaired, due to the measurement of only part of the treatment, not the health system [ 8 ].…”
