Changes in land use and land cover in watersheds, together with population increases and urbanization of these areas, have caused negative impacts on surface water quality. Based on land-use types, we conducted a comprehensive water quality study of the Rio do Peixe watershed, a tributary of the Rio Doce River, located in the Iron Quadrangle, with different land uses/land covers. For this study, the relationship between water quality variables and land use types were examined according to the water quality index and principal components analysis. The water samples were collected from twelve stations located along the basin in two different seasons. The results of metals/semimetals concentrations reflected regional lithology, and in the case of iron, it was anthropic activities. Also, the computed water quality index values were between 26.8 and 74.9. The water quality was poor in four stations of the river basin in both seasons. Furthermore, the variables that influence water quality the most were E. coli, DBO, turbidity, nitrate, and total phosphorus. The multivariate statistics gave five principal components that together accounted for 58.3%, whereas analysis of score plots identified the formation of two groups with more perceptible anthropic influence. Finally, environmental impacts of the river basin, such as deforestation, erosion, domestic sewage, and iron ore tailings, were the main factors that interfered with water quality.

In 2015, the Gualaxo do Norte River basin suffered from a serious environmental disaster that affected the quality of the river environment due to the disruption of the Fundão dam structures located in Bento Rodrigues Sub-district, Mariana, Minas Gerais/ Brazil. Due to the impacts of the disaster and in view of the economic and social importance of the Gualaxo do Norte river basin, this research assessed the current situation of the river basin through sediment studies with the aim of assessing the environmental impacts caused by tailings tailings. iron ore from the rupture and other sources of pollution in the bottom sediment. To this end, water and sediment samples were collected at 27 stations throughout the Gualaxo do Norte River basin in August 2016 and January 2017, upstream (unaffected by the dam breach) and downstream of the disaster. (affected by dam tailings). The sediment results indicate that in sampling stations not affected by the disaster, metal and semimetal concentrations reflect the geology of the Iron Quadrangle. However, in the area affected by the environmental disaster, there were changes in the chemical and physical properties of the bottom sediment, especially in iron concentrations. This has reflected in contamination and iron enrichment at stations downstream of the environmental disaster.

The multiple environmental dynamics of watersheds make these natural spaces interesting objects of study, and in areas with few scientific investigations, such as the Mestre Campo Stream watershed, the need for these investigations is even greater. The accomplishment of this paper sought to characterize the morphometry of Mestre Campo Stream Watershed, located in Piranga City, Minas Gerais, Brazil, as a first activity to create a management plan for the natural resources available in the area. Therefore, TOPODATA geomorphological data were used in a geographic information system (GIS) to extract the morphometric information -area and respective perimeter, length of axis and of drainage network -from the study area and, then, these variables were used to estimate the following indicators: form factor, circularity and compactness indexes, elongation ratio and drainage density, in order to describe the watershed. The morphometric indexes indicated an elongated behavior for the watershed, characterizing it as a space of low susceptibility to flooding under normal precipitation conditions. In addition, the drainage network showed fourth-order ramifications and a median capacity of drainage. The sub-watersheds that makes the Mestre Campo Stream Watershed were also characterized, the Sub-watershed of Brum Stream presented a rounded shape, while the Alto Mestre Campo Sub-watershed presented elongated characteristics. These results highlight the heterogeneity of Mestre Campo Stream Watershed, which must be considered when elaborating the management plan for the studied watershed, respecting the particularities of that geographic space in order to properly explore its natural resources.
