PurposeIt was aimed to propose and test a theoretical model to evaluate how some dimensions of environmental awareness influence the intention of consuming organic products using gender as a control variable.Design/methodology/approachThe research was developed through quantitative methodology with the use of multivariate data analysis (PLS-SEM). The model uses a second-order construct. Although, it was conducted in a nonprobabilistic way using a convenience sample, with 213 university students.FindingsIt was confirmed the relation between the environmental awareness dimensions' influence and the intention to buy organic products that is also influenced according to the consumers' gender. There is a more positive effect and intensity in the organics' purchase by women.Research limitations/implicationsThe nonprobabilistic nature in addition to the use of the convenience sample, factors that do not allow the generalization of the results, are some limitations. Moreover, the dimensions of environmental awareness proposed do not include all of the motivators about the organic consumption.Practical implicationsThe results identified the factors that motivate the intention to consume organic products in Brazilian context and can contribute to managerial strategies formulation in order to increase the value perceived by the customer in relation to the consumption of these products.Originality/valueThis paper presents a deeper understanding about the dynamics between the factors that can guide the choice for organic products, besides providing a greater theoretical and empirical support tested by the use of a second-order construct.

Esta pesquisa objetiva investigar a atitude e o comportamento do turista de sol e praia em relação à sustentabilidade, verificando a influência da atitude e do comportamento habitual no comportamento em viagem. Para tanto, realizou-se esta pesquisa em Jericoacoara, situada no Estado do Ceará, nordeste brasileiro. A pesquisa é caracterizada como quantitativa, realizada por meio de survey e foi aplicada com 188 turistas de sol e praia. Os resultados evidenciam que as atitudes sustentáveis influenciam o comportamento sustentável em viagem, de modo que a atitude de crença antropocêntrica teve efeito negativo, enquanto as atitudes de crença ecocêntrica relacionadas aos recursos naturais e ao consumo tiveram efeito positivo. No tocante aos comportamentos sustentáveis habituais, verificou-se influência positiva dos comportamentos relacionados à reciclagem, economia de água e energia e limpeza urbana no comportamento sustentável em viagem. Dessa forma, pode-se compreender que o indivíduo que apresenta atitudes e comportamentos sustentáveis em seu cotidiano tende a estendê-los a diversos ambientes, confirmando o ditado popular de que “costume de casa vai à praça”, no caso, à praia.

This article dwells on the role of gamified digital tools in promoting environmental self-awareness and action. In particular, it unfolds the outreach of a web application, developed within the European GoBeEco project, aimed at encouraging users to adopt ecological and sustainability habits. In this article, the focus is on the implementation of the project in Portugal, and, therefore, the data presented in the results reflect the involvement of participants on a national level. Overall, more than two dozen participants were involved in the validation of the application, which comprised three evaluation phases involving the distribution of questionnaires and the organisation of a focus group aimed at assessing the role of GoBeEco in fostering sustainable personal change and also evaluating specifically the role that gamified elements played in that change. Results show that the application had a very positive impact on the users and helped mitigate the well-documented gap between sustainable awareness and action, and, also, that the gamification strategy contributed to that purpose. We argue that the potential of these applications in Portugal is latent but still has room for growth. In this sense, the study also highlights future paths for the development and implementation of these tools, based on the features most valued by users—access to statistical data, examples from real life, gamified and fun elements, and focus on daily, individual actions, among others.
