Brazilian biomes have been experiencing an increase in fires during the whole year, but fires increase substantially during drier periods. Several indexes might be good indicators of the severity of the droughts, such as The Rainfall Anomaly Index (RAI), Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Vegetation Health Index (VHI). This study therefore aimed to understand the dynamics of climate, using some indexes and fires in Paraíba do Sul River Valley, Paulista portion, to verify whether fire is more likely to spread in hotter and drier years. We hypothesized that fire events are more frequent and burned areas are larger in hotter and drier years in the region. By conducting a cross-correlation analysis and separating the monthly data into dry and rainy seasons, it was possible to establish a correlation between climate parameters and fire. A significant correlation was found between RAI and fires in both seasons. Additionally, we observed that high occurrences of fire events and burning areas were more explained by RAI, VHI and SPI-3 in dry and wet seasons than by temperature and SPI-1, SPI-6 and SPI-12. We noticed a complex dynamic between fire events, burned area, the environment, and climatic variables. However, the studied indexes proved to be effective tools for detecting drought conditions in the region and their relationship to fire. Among the activities affected by rainfall variability, agriculture is one of the most vulnerable. In this sense, this work aimed to relate the interannual rainfall variability with the soybean yields variability in Mata Roma municipality, Maranhão, considering dry and rainy events. For this, for the period from 2003 to 2019, data on average soybean yield and rainfall in this producing region, which is one of the main ones in the State, were analyzed. Monthly rainfall data for the period 1985-2019 were also analyzed and the dry and rainy events were identified in these two meteorological data series. The results showed that rainfall from January to May explains about 99%, on average, of the interannual variation of yields and that occurrence of dry and very humid periods disfavor the soybean crop, causing, in most cases, yields and productions far below the average for the study region. Based on the regression analysis, it was found that maximum average yield of 2942.52 kg×ha?1 was reached with an average rainfall of 1709 mm.

O semiárido do Nordeste do Brasil possui intensa variabilidade pluviométrica com ocorrência de eventos extremos de precipitação. O impacto socioambiental da seca, nem sempre está relacionado à falta de chuvas em um determinado ano, mas está relacionado também a distribuição e frequência das chuvas. Dessa forma, foi analisado a variabilidade espaço temporal da precipitação da bacia hidrográfica do rio Moxotó empregando o Índice de Anomalia de Chuva (IAC) desenvolvido por Rooy (1965) com o objetivo de verificar ocorrências de mudanças nos padrões climáticos de precipitação e realizar o mapeamento do IAC para a média histórica analisada. Assim, utilizou-se valores médios mensais da precipitação pluviométrica da série histórica de 1989 a 2018, medidos de 16 estações pluviométricas, obtidos da Agência Pernambucana de Águas e Clima. Os resultados revelam uma estabilidade na precipitação da região, sem tendências significativas de aumento ou diminuição. Há correlação dos eventos extremos de secas e precipitação com os fenômenos de El Niño, La Niña e Dipolo do Atlântico. Analisando a série histórica por meio do IAC a bacia hidrográfica do rio Moxotó foi classificada como habitual. Os anos de 1989, 2004, e 2009 foram classificados como anos extremamente úmidos. Já 1993, 1998 e 2012 foram anos extremamente secos. Enquanto 2002, 2007 e 2017 foram anos habituais. A quadra chuvosa também é caracterizada como habitual.
