Análise da pesca esportiva competitiva de beira de praia em Sergipe

Abstract: This study aimed at identifying the species caught in competitive fishing events and to analyze the profile of recreational fishers in Sergipe. Sampling took place during nine rounds of the XXI Campeonato Sergipano de Pesca da ASPA-BV in 2014. Sampled fishes were identified, measured, weighed, and had their sex and maturation stage identified. A total of 2,794 fishes (449 kg) were caught, from which 61.7% were sampled. The most commonly caught species were Sciades proops, Menticirrhus littoralis, and Polydacty… Show more

“…() also found the same pattern of total mortality in males and females of C. major at Piedade Beach in the state of Pernambuco, but these authors’ estimates were much higher (3.96 and 3.06/year, respectively), probably due to the local high exploitation of this resource. The low mortality observed in the present study in relation to other regions is associated with the underexploitation of this potential resource by recreational fishers in the state of Sergipe, where shrimp is the most preferred natural bait (Freire et al., ). Thus, this study sets a baseline of population parameters estimated for an underexploited population.…”

“…Compared to other beaches of northeastern Brazil, Aruanda Beach is less urbanized and C. major is the only callianassid species inhabiting the local sandy beaches. Moreover, ghost shrimp harvesting is incipient, since recreational fishers prefer to use penaeid shrimps as live bait (Freire, Luz, Santos, & Oliveira, ). Thus, these differences in density of burrows could be related to degree of urbanization and anthropogenic impact on the beaches, as well as to exploitation status of this resource for its use as live bait.…”

“…In some cases it is difficult to differentiate recreational from subsistence fishing. For example, Brazil has a strong consumption-oriented fishing habit (see, e.g., Freire et al, 2017), which also blurs the boundary between recreational and subsistence fishing, leading to conflicts among stakeholders (Lyman, 2008). These conflicts are more serious with groups that promote catch-and-release as a management tool (Policansky, 2002).…”

“…The long term experience of recreational fishers affiliated to CLUPESIL of up to 55 years allowed them to point out some of the problems affecting the sector in Ilhéus. Fishers attributed most of the problems to shrimp trawling, a view shared with fishers from the state of Sergipe, together with lack of fishes, which may actually be tightly linked to each other (Freire et al 2017). A large proportion of recreational fishers in Ilhéus stated the habit of releasing small fishes.…”

“…This is equally true for cold temperate marine waters in South America, where Llompart et al (2012) claimed to have analysed for the first time the major coastal recreational fishery. In northeastern Brazil, a typically tropical area, the availability of studies is also scarce (see, e.g., Nunes et al 2012;Freire et al 2017). In this region, recreational fishers are organized in fishing clubs and prefer shore-based fishing activities (Freire 2005), even though offshore recreational fisheries have been gaining many adepts throughout the years (Freire et al 2018).…”
