Shore-based competitive recreational fisheries in southern Bahia, Brazil: A baseline study

Abstract: This study describes shore-based competitive fishing events in Ilhéus, southern Bahia (Brazil), including catch composition, and provides information on the profile of recreational fishers participating in these events. Information was collected in all events promoted by the Clube de Pesca de Ilhéus (CLUPESIL) in 2007-2008. A total of 26 competitive fishing events were organized during this period, with 47 species caught. The top species were: Cathorops spixii, Menticirrhus littoralis, Trachinotus goodei, Euci… Show more

“…The absence of rostrum indicates that M. cuiaranensis lives in environments of unconsolidated sediment as mentioned for other species of the same genus Menticirrhus (Carvalho et al, 2020). Polydactylus virginicus showed a reduction in the aspect ratio in specimens larger than 15 cm TL, when this species starts the maturation process (Freire et al, 2020). This may indicate a change in habitat after maturity between juveniles and adults, or in swimming capacity associated with feeding change.…”

“…Since macrofauna is an important food source for fish, these impacts may affect nekton through the trophic cascade (Azevedo- Santos et al 2021). Our data also show that the Guriri Beach holds an abundant juvenile population of P. oligodon, Menticirrhus spp., and T. carolinus, whose adults are economically exploited by subsistence and recreational fisheries (Pinheiro & Joyeux 2007, Hostim-Silva & Soares 2013, Freire et al 2020. The above further reinforces the importance of a local monitoring program for surf fishes.…”
