In modern agriculture, most of the field operations from sowing to harvesting are done mechanically by using heavy agriculture machines. However, the loads from these heavy machines may induce stresses exceeding soil strength causing soil compaction. Nowadays, soil compaction is considered as a serious form of soil degradation, which may have serious economics and environmental consequences in world agriculture because of its effects on soil structure, plant growth and environmental events. Vehicle load, inflation pressure, number of passes, stress on the soil, and soil properties (e.g. soil water content, soil texture, soil strength, soil bulk density) play an important role on soil compaction. This chapter reviews the works related to soil compaction in agricultural areas. Also, it discusses the nature and causes of soil compaction, the effects of the compaction on soil properties, environment and plant growth, and the possible solutions suggested in the literature.

Sunflower to be used in ornamental floral arrangements need to be free from damage, and have longer shelf life. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on the postharvest longevity of ornamental sunflower. Floral stems of the cultivar Vicent’s Choice from Sakata Seed were placed in flasks containing 350 mL of solution containing 0, 200, 400, 600, 800, or 1000 mg of ASA per liter of distilled water. Aspirin® (acetylsalicylic acid) tablets were used as the source of salicylic acid. Grades from 0 to 5 were assigned every day, according to a pre-established criteria for assessing the longevity and quality of the inflorescences. The data were subjected to analysis of variance, Tukey’s test (t = 0.05%), and regression analysis using Sisvar program. Significant differences were observed in the grades from the sixth to the tenth day of treatment, but not in the total longevity. Treatment with 400 mg L-1 of ASA improved the commercial longevity to an average of 9 days, about 4 days more than the control (0 mg L-1). At 400 mg L-1 dose, ASA prolongs the commercial longevity and maintains the postharvest quality of ornamental sunflower stems. However, at the maximum dose used (1000 mg L-1), the evaluated parameters did not show any improvement over the controls.

Sri Lanka is among the 16 countries with the highest leprosy burden. There have been no reviews of the globally reported data from Sri Lanka and data quality has not been ascertained. Methods We conducted a detailed analysis of cases in the leprosy databases available at the Anti-Leprosy Campaign (ALC). Details of all reported cases of leprosy from 2015 to 2019 were analysed by a panel of experts. In the event of discrepancies or missing data, additional information and new datasheets were obtained from ALC through personal communication.Results The total number of leprosy cases reported over the period (2015-2019) was 9294, and the average annual number of cases was within the range of 1749-2002. Regarding the accuracy and validity of the key indicators, the major indicators were within the range of other parallel data sources, with the exception of 2015. However, when analysing the datasets, a clear observation was that databases were created using different terminology, and there were no standard data entry guidelines available throughout this time period, which may have affected the completeness of the data, thus affecting data quality. Digit preferences, duplicates, and outliers, which were mainly confined to a few years, were observed.
