Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of acute chiropractic adjustment in individuals who practice CrossFit with regard to complaints of low back pain and the joint range of motion in this region. Methods: A randomized clinical trial comprised of CrossFit practitioners from a box in Novo Hamburgo-RS, of both sexes and aged 18 to 40 years who had low back pain at the time of the study. The following tools were used: Semi-structured Anamnesis Questionnaire, Visual Analog Scale, McGill Pain Questionnaire, and SF-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire. Individuals in the control group answered the questionnaires before and after CrossFit training. The chiropractic group performed the same procedure, plus pre-training chiropractic adjustment and joint range of motion (ROM) before and after lumbar adjustment. Results: There was a significant increase in pain in the control group, and a significant decrease in pain in the chiropractic group, including one day after the chiropractic adjustment. In the chiropractic group, the joint ranges of motion had a significant increase in flexion and extension of the lumbar spine after chiropractic adjustment. Conclusion: The chiropractic group achieved a significant improvement in pain level and joint range of motion, suggesting that acute chiropractic adjustment was effective in reducing low back pain.Keywords: Physical exercise; Manipulation, chiropractic; Low back pain; Range of motion; articular. Abstract Introduction:The ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic, progressive disease and inflammatory, which produces pain, musculoskeletal injuries and changes the chest expansion, functional capacity, and quality of life. Objectives: Evaluate the effects of a physical therapy intervention program in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Patients and Methods: This is a longitudinal and interventional study. The sample included four female subjects with a mean age of 55.25±3,30 years. The patients underwent an initial assessment, which consisted of data collection, and specific tests and protocol, such as Schober Test, Stibor Test, and the Tilt Test Back and Side of the body; the evaluation of the chest wall expansion, the application of Visual Analogue Scale, and implement the Questionnaire to assess the Quality of Life SF-36. After an initial evaluation, the patients underwent an intervention program based on therapeutic exercise, which was conducted in groups, two times per week and duration of 1 hour per session, totaling 15 sessions. Results: There was no statistical difference in the results of the variables pain, chest expansion, and quality of life. However, there was increased mobility of the spine by Stibor test (p≤0.05). Conclusion: According to the assessment protocols and tests used, the kinesiotherapeutic exercise program conducted during this study involving patients with ankylosing spondylitis was not statistically significant in the following variables: pain, chest expansion, and quality of life. However, it has been shown effective in spinal mobility, according to Stibor test.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Systemic sclerosis is a chronic, multi-systemic and auto-immune disease, characterized by widespread angiopathy in small and microcirculation, Raynoud's phenomenon and skin and internal organs fibrosis. Physiotherapy is an effective alternative to fight musculoskeletal injuries caused by the disease. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of a physiotherapy program on pain and quality of life of two systemic sclerosis elderly patients. CASE REPORTS: Longitudinal and interventionist case study. Participated in the study two elderly patients with systemic sclerosis, treated in the Physiotherapy Clinic, Universidade de Passo Fundo/RS. Patients were submitted to baseline evaluation made up of data collection (history and physical-functional evaluation) and application of the visual analog scale and of the Quality of Life Questionnaire -Medical Outcomes Study 36 -Item ShortForm Health Survey (SF-36) translated and validated to the Portuguese language. After baseline evaluation, elderly patients were submitted to a kinesiotherapy-based intervention program, with frequency of 2 weekly sessions and duration of 1h per session, in a total of 15 sessions. According to the visual analog scale, patients have improved pain and, according to SF-36, have improved quality of life. CONCLUSION: Kinesiotherapy-based physiotherapeutic intervention protocol was an effective strategy to treat pain and improve quality of life of systemic sclerosis elderly patients.
