“…Although any decreasing in HRT on one hand increases the organic loading rate, which is reported to improve the reactor performance up to a certain limit (8) , it is on the another hand increasing the upflow velocity which, above a certain value, can reduce the solids removal due to its effects on the sludge retention (6) . Also, HRT is a major parameter which determines the SRT (13) .…”

“…It plays an important role in methane production from acetate and the optimum condition for its growth should be considered to harvest biogas as renewable fuel (Tabatabaei et al 2009). Effective treatment of POME in UASBR is due to its ability to treat wastewater with high suspended solid contents (Fang and Chui 1994;Kalyunzai et al 1998) that may clog reactors with packing material and also provide higher methane production (Kalyunzai et al 1996;Stronach et al 1978). However, this reactor might face long-startup periods if the seeded sludge is not granulated and this problem can be overcome by seeding the reactor with granulated sludge, resulting high performance along with shorter start-up period (Latif et al 2011a, b).…”

“…This was attributed to the high recirculation flow rate which provided rapid mixing and fast diffusion of the accumulated VFAs into the biofilm where microbes were accumulated. The efficiency of the UASB process for the treatment of raw and pre-clarified potato maize waste up to the OLR of about 13-14 g COD/L.day was illustrated by Kalyuzhnyi et al (1998).…”
