An Update on Lymphocyte Subtypes in Asthma and Airway Disease

Abstract: Inflammation is a hallmark of many airway diseases. Improved understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of airway disease will facilitate the transition in our understanding from phenotypes to endotypes, thereby improving our ability to target treatments based on pathophysiologic characteristics. For example, allergic asthma has long been considered to be driven by an allergen-specific T helper 2 response. However, clinical and mechanistic studies have begun to shed light on the role of other cell … Show more

“…The characteristics of chronic inflammation in different conditions can be influenced by the functions of various sets of adaptive immune cells. These include the effect of immunological skewing influenced by Th1, Th2, Th17, or T‐regulatory cells, all of which can lead to different inflammatory consequences . For example, Th17 skewing influences the inflammatory response in the rheumatoid arthritic joint to generate cartilage degradation, whereas Th2 skewing in atopic dermatitis can result in skin barrier dysfunction and promotion of epithelial cell hyperplasia .…”

“…During lung inflammation, immune cell skewing can result in different pathological outcomes. For instance, classical Th1 responses lead to a pro‐inflammatory microenvironment and tissue destruction, while Th2 immunity promotes tissue remodeling, airway hyper‐responsiveness and eosinophilic infiltration . In addition to T‐cell subsets, the role of macrophage diversity is another component that is involved in skewing immune responses and pathology.…”

“…As IL‐33 and IL‐25 are important activators of ILC2s, and ILC2s have been recognized as an important innate cell type involved in Th2 cell sensitisation and propagation of Th2 driven disease, we determined the effect of BP SCIT on the number of ILC2s and their production of IL‐5. BP SCIT treatment greatly reduced the number of BALF and lung ILC2s (Figure A, identified as Lin − [CD3 − CD19 − B220 − DX5 − FcɛRI − GR‐1 − CD11c − ],CD45 + , ST2 + , CD127 + , CD25 + in BALF and in lung).…”

“…Воздействие аллергенов и разнообразных неспецифических факторов на дыхательные пути провоцирует в сенсибилизированном организме развитие острых реакций в виде бронхоспазма, отека стенки бронхов, обтурации их просвета слизью. Хроническое аллерги-ческое воспаление со временем приводит к ремоделированию бронхов [1,2,5,10,19,23,30].…”
